Contest runs from Sept. 1st to Sept. 30th. Let the planning/storyboards/fun begin!

Mini-Wardrobe Contest - Expand Your Wardrobe

This is a contest to create a 5-piece wardrobe in 4 weeks. Four of these pieces must be sewn during the contest period.

**The 5th piece, known as the KEY item, can be something you already own, something you purchase, something you have made in the past or something you make during the contest. The KEY item must work with all the other pieces. It needs to co-ordinate with the other four ITEMS, but need not be included in every OUTFIT.**

These 5 items must combine to make a minimum of 6 different outfits.

Example: 2 bottoms, 2 tops, & a topper (eg, a shrug) as the KEY item. Each top matches both bottoms, & the topper goes with all. This gives 8 outfits.

Storyboard: It is suggested that each entrant make a storyboard, which is a plan showing the planned garments and the minimum quantity of outfits. This will help the entrants visualize the garments together, and to complete the mini-wardrobe in the contest period. The storyboard can be drawn and posted in a work in progress (WIP) review that can be updated during the contest.

The actual entry review will be a "composite review" for the wardrobe itself. The composite review should have links to the individual reviews of each item. (If all items are from one wardrobe pattern, the one review will suffice.) The composite review is posted in the regular reviews section once all your items are completed. The composite review needs to be completed and posted by midnight Sept. 30th. (But there will be a couple of days allowed for tweaking of the composite review after the contest period ends - just in case).
Here is a link to last year's contest, if you click on "read review" of any of the entries, it will show you how a composite review should be done.
2011 Mini Wardrobe Contest Gallery

PLEASE NOTE:
Each garment made must have an individual review. However, these individual reviews are ONLY posted in the regular reviews on the home page. Do not post them as a contest entry. Once you have completed all your items, make the composite review showing all the combinations of the items together (or at least the 6 required combinations).

This wardrobe/ensemble may be created for men, women, or children. Doll clothing is not admissible. Accessories, while they may be made and showcased with the wardrobe, are not a part of this contest. An accessory will not count as one of the 5 items.

Examples using the 5th item
You make for the contest:
long buttoned shirt
tee
shorts
skirt
and the KEY item is leggings.
The leggings can be worn with the shirt alone, with the tee alone, with the tee and shirt.
They could be worn under the shorts
They could be worn under the skirt

Example: Your KEY item is a top. The top must COORDINATE with all other ITEMS in the wardrobe.

The Key Item definitely does NOT need to be worn with every item. The spirit of the contest is that if someone has a top that they want to be the Key Item, then they can also have a dress or another top that coordinates with it (i.e. similar fabric or color or style) but doesn't literally have to be worn on top of or underneath the second item. The second piece (the dress or other top in the example) needs to be tied to the Key Item via another piece - jacket, topper, pants, etc.

Another example:
If jeans are the Key Item and a dress coordinated with the jeans (denim dress?) and the tops/jackets/toppers made to go with the jeans also worked with the dress, it could be considered a collection without actually wearing the jeans with the dress. The jeans can be tied to the dress via the additional pieces - tops, blouse, jackets, toppers, etc. If you can wear a top/jacket with the jeans and the same top/jacket with the dress, the jeans coordinate with the dress. For instance, a white cami style top could be worn with the jeans and the same white top could be worn under the dress. Or perhaps a white blouse as a top with jeans and as a "jacket" over the dress.

Prizes

The first- and second-place winners will be decided by member vote.
Prizes: First and Second Prize winners will receive a complimentary swatch service (a $30 value) AND a $75 Gift Certificate to shop at Vogue Fabrics Store.

FAQs
Q: Does everything have to be able to be worn at the same time?
A: No, but the entire collection needs to coordinate and the Key Item should be viewed as the anchor to your collection.

Q: Can I make my KEY item now?
A: Yes - HOWEVER only the KEY item can be made now.

Q: Do I have to use a commercial pattern?
A: No, you can use a self-drafted pattern, a frankenpattern, a downloaded pattern or no pattern at all!

Q: Can I make a muslin and/or alter a pattern before the contest, or use a pattern I have used before?
A: Yes - HOWEVER, no cutting into the fabric to be used in the contest before Sept. 1 (with the exception of the KEY item noted above).

Q: Do I have to use different patterns for each item?
A: No. You can use the same pattern as many times as you wish as long as you have 5 items - including the KEY item - that combine to make a minimum of 6 different outfits.

Q: Can I make more than 5 items?
A: Yes - however, only 5 items can be reviewed and entered in the contest per entry. Please remember that the KEY item must coordinate with all other items in the contest entry.

Q: Does the wardrobe have to be street clothes?
A: No! You could make a lingerie wardrobe, a swimsuit wardrobe, a workout wardrobe, or whatever as long as it follows all the other rules.

Q: How many "Points" do I enter for this contest? Won't those who have made their Key item have more points that those whose Key item was purchased?
A: Points do not matter and are not counted in this contest. If the field cannot be left blank, you can enter 1 point for each item reviewed.

Thanks! I like that there's more flexibility in this than there sometimes is. So, if I wanted to, say, use a top I already owned as item 5, make one top, one pair of pants, one skirt, and a bolero or something, that could work?

That would work! Math example:

Top 1 already owned
Top 2 MWI (mini-wardrobe item) 1
Pants MWI 2
Skirt MWI 3
Topper MWI 4
Equals 5 items

T1 + MWI 2
T1 + MWI 3
T2 + MWI 2
T2 + MWI 3
T1 + MWI 2 + MWI 4
T1 + MWI 3 + MWI 4
T2 + MWI 2 + MWI 4
T2 + MWI 3 + MWI 4
Equals 8 combinations

Glad to see the official rules up nice and early. This contest definitely requires more planning time to get the sewing done within the month.

Now to make a muslin of intended blouse pattern...'cause I tend to get can't-cut-into-perfectly-matching-fabric paralysis that can ruin the everything!

Thank you for that...I'll have to print it out for my planning.

For those non-computer types who want to do a collage/composite photo,Picasa, a free download, will do a collage photo for you! It's the only way I can do them, since my computer and paint has been non cooperative.

...

Fantastic that the rules are out so early! <---applause emoticon

However, I am confused. In the first post, it says ''**The 5th item must work with all the other pieces.**''

In the example above, the 5th item is T1, I guess? So T1 must also pair with T2 = MWI 1, I guess? Or not?

If the 5th item must team up with all MWIs, a topper may be the easiest to chose. Skirts and pants could be more challenging (unless the pants are e.g. leggings so you can wear the skirt over the leggings).

Thanks for clarification!

OK GBK, stop overthinking this - you're confusing me! Did I mention I'm blonde?

Anyway - a top doesn't necessarily have to "go" with another top. It would have to match both bottoms and the topper in the example above. If the 5th item were a jacket, it WOULD have to go with all the other items.

That's how I read it but I'll check with the Committee to make sure.

Cool! And my applause to you, too, for doing the math. You'll notice I didn't even try, lol.

I also really want to applaud the committee on this, because sometimes it seems contests require people to sew items they don't really need, just so everyone is exactly on the same page. The versatility helps a lot, since those of us who have limited time for sewing need to focus on sewing what we really NEED.

skirt with owned top = outfit 1
skirt with owned top and bolero = outfit 2
skirt with sewn top = outfit 3
skirt with sewn top and bolero = outfit 4
pants with owned top = outfit 5
pants with owned top and bolero = outfit 6
pants with sewn top = outfit 7
pants with sewn top and bolero = outfit 8

See, I can actually do math if forced to.
But yes, I see what you mean -- the owned top has to coordinate, but you can't be wearing two tops at the same time, unless they're layered.

I may try this again and see if it works with one owned top, three bottoms, and one bolero. I like that even better, so...

owned top + bottom 1
owned top + bottom 2
owned top + bottom 3
owned top + bottom 1 + bolero
owned top + bottom 2 + bolero
owned top + bottom 3 + bolero

Nope, only 6. I'll stick to plan A.

Please don't get me wrong: I do not want the rules to be overly complex - the easier and more flexible they are, the better!

As Joan says: it's great if a contest allows you to sew what you really need.
