Shortening a pattern

When you fold at the lengthen/shorten line to shorten a pattern l, do you fold the excess up or down? There's a difference in shape if you do it one way as opposed to the other. Thank you!!!!!

I do it in the direction that doesn't get in my way when I true the pattern.

I fold it in the direction where I have to true the sideseam less. Also, sometimes I'll even slash across the line and raise the piece above or below it to shorten.
