Date: 8/13/12 3:02 PM I have a seemingly dated piece of polyester. You know the type, from the 70s, a bit shiny, stretches vertically, but barely stretches horizontally. It's also only 46" wide. I'm thinking of making V1250, but that would call for turning the pieces cross grain. Is this a bad idea? |

Date: 8/13/12 8:17 PM Good question; I'm familiar with this type of polyester...and looking at that dress, I'm in a conundrum. The ripples near the waistline show that they need to have some stretch, which in normal instances would be crossgrain because crossgrain knits stretch. But I'm also thinking of your polyester being fairly thick; is this true? If so, I wouldn't use it at all because it's the thinness of the fabric on the model that also helps with the rippling; it makes the folds more distinct. A thicker fabric would make it look like you were wearing a blanket around you.
I can suggest a bamboo knit for this dress, or an ITY knit. ------ "We don't impose our rhythm on Nature. The key is to respect and live within Her." Jean-Charles Boisset, Winemaker

Date: 8/14/12 0:30 AM There are 95 reviews of this "A Best Pattern of 2011." Check the FABRIC USED on a few of them and see how the fabric drapes for various review models. That could give you an indication of the fabric you might want to make it out of. ------ Judy |

Date: 8/14/12 7:45 PM Yes, it's a ...knit. It's that somewhat shiny stuff from the 70s. Look in your dad's closet. he probably has a shirt made of this stuff :)
Not much stretch at all crosswise, but plenty vertically. |

Date: 8/14/12 7:46 PM The fabric is thin, but now after staring at it for a while, I think I'll skip 1250. But I'm still curious about the cross grain -- whether the option is there to turn the pattern and use the benefit of the stretch. |

Date: 8/14/12 7:48 PM Yeah, a couple of those reviews are my own. This is not a popular fabric and its age makes it not very current. |

Date: 8/14/12 7:49 PM Thanks y'all. I think I've reconsidered and plan to do another pattern. Didn't want to get started only to find it wasn't going to work well. |
