This past Friday, my Inspiron laptop was fine, no problems connecting to my wireless and to the internet.

Friday night I shut it off, unplugged it and put it away in its case.

Saturday morning...trouble! It said it was connected to my wireless, but that the wireless was NOT connected to the internet (and to call my net service provider).

Thing is, while it was telling me this all day long, both my Ipad and my HP desktop were connected to my wireless and to the internet, no problems at all.

When I called Dell, they told me as my software warranty had expired (that very day. Hmmmm.) they would walk me through the fix for only $239.

I said "Gee no thanks", or words to that effect.

So...does anyone have any ideas as to why my other computers could connect just fine to the internet via my wireless, yet suddenly my Dell laptop can't?

Or any ideas on how to fix? I absolutely refuse to pay Dell one red cent!

I have a Dell and have had this problem....unfortunately I don't remember what I did about it. I am thinking I did a total shutdown and restart but it sounds like you did that already. When you do a restart, it forces the computer to go through its diagnostics.

As an aside, I worked in IT for 30 years and nothing could make me lose my temper like connectivity problems.

Are you getting your signal from a router? If so you need to unplug the router, wait for 30 seconds or so, then plug it back in. When all it's lights come on then restart your laptop. It should reconnect. If this isn't your configuration, please explain your setup.

Positive the router is fine; both my desktop and my Ipad are connecting to the internet with no problem at all. My Ipad is even connecting from downstairs in the garage, lol!

The Dell won't. It says it's connected to my wireless, but that the wireless is not connected to the internet. Yes, it is. As we can all see. *waving*

I googled, and pages upon pages came up with people having exactly the same problem...with Dell Inspiron connecting to the wireless but not the internet. Several say they spent hours online with Dell "Support", and still couldn't get a fix.

Could be this is just a rather expensive piece of carp.

Did that, yep. Came very very close to chucking it out the window, too.

I have no idea.. as you might already know.. but if you copy/paste this and send it to me I can forward it to someone who might.. like my son for instance..
Hopefully with all the computer brains we have here on PR someone can get you the advise you need which would be a lot quicker.. if not.. then send it to me and I will see what he has to say about it.

Sometimes resetting both the router and the laptop then allow them to talk again. If you haven't already restarted both, I would try it.

Are you running windows 7?

If so, try the following:

- go to network and sharing
- on the left, there should be a link to manage wireless
- open and find your access point
- delete it and re-add it, mark it as home when prompted
- try to connect

I'm on my android tablet, but if you get stuck I can do better instructions at work later when I have my win7 machine in front of me

we have a periodic problem with connectivity in one device, briefly unplugging the router and plugging it back in does help. Even if other devices are connected. Certainly a cheap fix to try
