Like her blog "Gertie's New Blog for Better Sewing", it's written in her usual fun style. It looks to be full of good info, and even has several patterns included. I've only just started reading it, but I'm really enjoying it.

Date: 8/25/12 4:37 PM The publication date got moved up a few days, so it's available now. I preordered it so I would get it as soon as it became available.

Date: 8/25/12 4:41 PM Yeah, I preordered it with Amazon - got here quick too! As to what I've been doing, there's a 1950 Vogue blouse that's currently under construction. Haven't finished it yet, but it will be pretty! It's got the ubiquitous early 1950's shawl collar, and cute little split sleeves that extend just past the shoulder. I need to finish tacking the facings, do some decorative topstitching, and putting in the buttonholes.

Date: 9/12/12 10:45 AM I got the book today and have never done any retro sewing.
I find that a lot of things looks too small or are they supposed to be so tight. I also have an issue with the armcycles of the Sultry Sheath and on the other variation of that dress. there´s also the hemline of the full red skirt...
Is it my lack of retrosewing that makes me react? ------ www.karinskammare.blogspot.com |

Date: 9/12/12 12:12 PM I see your point. Gerties in the wiggle dress looks like she can barely wiggle. But some of the styles look very wearable, for example the shells. And the I love the techniques presented.

2 members like this. Date: 9/12/12 1:20 PM I like Gertie's blog, but I'm disappointed in this book. It includes several patterns with variations for each, but most aren't very appealing. Three of the patterns are the exact same patterns that come with her classes on Craftsy.com!!! Many of the photos show ripply hems, straining zippers, and garments that don't fit well.
It's obvious that Gertie put a lot of work into the book, and there is a nice discussion on the merits and challenges of vintage patterns. However, all of the construction and fitting info is pretty basic and available elsewhwere.
I love collecting and perusing sewing books...I have quite a collection....but I'll be selling this one.

Date: 9/13/12 2:46 PM I got the book the other day. Found it really useful. Lots of stuff other sewing books i have don't. It even covers hand sewing. Yay! Love the patterns although i found after making what im now calling a mock up that i need to add in quite a bit more ease to sit down in the pencil skirt. (i have big hips & small waist). ------ 'The purpose of most fashion is to be ostentatiously non-functional.' |
