Need help calculating quilt fabric yardage.

I have worked up my pattern and I am using denim I have on hand. The quilt is going to be 56" x 56". I am having 7 blocks to each row width and height. These will be 8 " blocks. I need to have 12 blocks in 2 different colors and then I need another color that will be for the back side of the quilt and that will be 49 blocks total. I thought I had it figured out but I am not sure now and in fact I am sure my initial thinking is wrong. Can you help please. ------ Jolene

A) How many blocks to make? B) How much fabric to buy? If it's no. B, add 1/2" to your 8" blocks and go from there. The rows will be 7 across by 7 down, meaning you need 49 blocks. In a strip that is 42" wide, as some quilting fabrics come 42" wide, and 9" long (which is a quarter yard), you will get four 8-1/2" blocks. Take your 49 blocks and subtract 12 = 37. Round this number up to the next divisible number by 4 (because you're cutting 4 per strip) to get the number of strips you need to cut. The rounded number is 40. And 40 divided by 4 (blocks per strip) = 10 strips at 9" (I'm rounding them up to 9" because that is a quarter yard, and you might need the extra for straightening) 9" x 10 strips = 90" You need 90" (about 2-1/2 yards) of fabric for your 37 blocks. As to the 12 blocks, being as you're cutting 4 blocks per strip, you need 3 strips at 9", which is 27" of fabric. Edited: I draw my stuff out on graph paper because I can't do the numbers in my head. I'd add at least 1-inch (which gives you 1/2-inch "ragged" seams"). You'll want to cut 9-inch blocks to start, and sew with 1/2-inch seam allowance. This doesn't substantially change the Miss Fairchild's advice. Cut 9-inch strips WOF, cut 9-inch blocks, you'll still get 4 blocks per strip (9x4=36). CMC -- Edited on 8/26/12 1:30 AM --
