Hi all, I just received my snippets today and she was featuring bras and panties. what I would like to know is, if anyone makes their own bras and if so, are you busty?
I am a 34-36 C-D bra, depending on the make, I am tired of spending a fortune on a little piece of fabric when I could probably do it myself. Bras stretch out to fast.
Do any of you know of a good pattern I can buy?
Thanks Ro

Use the search box in the top left corner of the screen here - search for "bra", and scroll down, you'll see there are a LOT of bra pattern reviews!! :)

Sigrid makes all her bras and she is a C or D cup. She has a blog and she has posted reviews of her bras here on PR. She makes amazing bras, the kind you'd spend major bucks for.

I've used the method in Leanne Burgess' book to make my own. You use a well fitting bra to make your pattern.

You can also check out the SewForthNow podcast (on iTunes) and Lori has a really good interview about sewing bras.

Check out Bra-makers supply. That have everything you could possibly want for making bras. I haven't made any bras (yet!) but another PR member told me about this site when I was looking for metal bra hooks.

I would definitely recommend getting a copy of the Bra-makers Manual. You can then use any pattern to make a bra that fits. I prefer the patterns at Bra-makers but I have also used Kwik Sew.

I am not busty (32B) but I make most of my bras now. I highly recommend the Pinup Girls patterns from Bramakers Supply. Either the Classic full band or Linda partial band are great patterns to start with. The instructions are excellent. You can get them directly from Bramakers Supply or from Elingeria. I don't recommend the Kwik Sew bra patterns, even though they are cheaper and more easily available. Kwik Sew is essentially a garment pattern company with a few bra patterns whereas the Pinup Girls patterns were created by someone that is an actual professional bra maker.

Also look into getting Duoplex for the cups. It is a pliable, easy-to-sew knit with almost no stretch. Generally the more stretch the less support so they highly recommend it for the larger cup sizes. You may need to go up half a cup size or increase the cup depth in order to account for the lack of stretch - do a few test cups before committing to a whole bra. You should also get a fairly heavy powernet, since most of the support in a bra should come from the band and not the straps. Bramakers Supply sells bra kits that include all of the fabrics and findings in case if you don't want to go hunting down everything individually.

I have both volumes of the Bramakers Manual. It is a fantastic resource but it has the potential to be very overwhelming for a beginner. Pick up a copy after you've made a bra or two and know this is something you want to dig deeper into.

Search on Etsy.com for bra making supplies. Somerset (not sure I have spelling right) and Merckwaerdigh both sell kits that include everything you need except for a pattern. Speaking of patterns, I recommend Merckwaerdigh highly. I have made a bra and camisole from her patterns and they fit beautifully. I wear a 34F but she drafts for many different sizes. If you have questions, she responds quickly to emails. The patterns assume some degree of experience. When I tried Pin Up Girls bra pattern, it took me 12 muslins to get an acceptable fit (they have a very pointy, bullet-shaped draft).

Don't forget Anne St. Claire at Needlenook Fabrics in Kansas! She is fabulous at fitting over email and postal mail. Can't say enough good things about her. I've been making my own bras over 10 years now, and use only her pattern. She has a book, too. even that is fabulous.
