Full top
Close-up armhole
I'm making Simplicity 1872 for my sister for a wedding next weekend. I've had some fit issues, but I'm taking in the top and sides of the skirt and those are going fine. But the armhole is also a little on the tight side for her and I don't know how I can possibly fix this without re-cutting the whole top!? It would be REALLY difficult to re-do the armholes themselves because of the type of self-fabric armband used and I can't add anything to the side seams cuz that fits perfectly. Can I add something to the shoulder seam? Will that help?? I guess I'd still have to re-do the armbands (PITA), but I don't know what else to do.
Any advice is greatly appreciated!! THANKS!!! ------ Brother Innovis 1250D

Date: 8/30/12 10:48 PM Oh my....if it was me, I would remove the bands, and then cut the armhole out a little bigger under the arm. Then recut your bands to the new bigger size and sew them back on. Here's hoping the steaming works tho before you have to opt for that. : ) ------ Consew 7360R, Singer 14U overlock, Necchi 521, Pfaff 900, US Blind Stitch 718-2, Singer New Family 12K treadle |

Date: 8/31/12 7:33 AM Depending on where the tightness is and how much "a little" tight it is, you could also try making the bands smaller - more like a bias binding than a band. Or you could just take them off all together, cut the armholes bigger and use a facing instead of a band. ------ Sewing is my therapy! |

Date: 8/31/12 8:29 AM As pretty as the band is, I'm thinking along the same lines as Pinkytoo. I would just take the band off, make the adjustment you need, then make a small hem or bias facing. Much less work in volved |

Date: 8/31/12 1:05 PM Just in case it's not obvious, you can just cut the bands off instead of ripping them out, since what you want is to make the armhole bigger. I sometimes get tunnel vision about stuff like this and reach for the seam ripper instead of thinking it through. ------ Debbie |

Date: 9/1/12 5:35 PM Is that fabric from JoAnn's? I think I used it for one of my dresses in July. It is not stretchy-I don't know if that is part of the problem. I would take the armbands off, cut the armhole deeper and use facings instead of the armband? It should be cute in the pattern! Hope you can fix this-it is always something when you have a deadline-at least it is for me. |

Date: 9/3/12 4:47 PM Ya...the problem is that the armbands look SO cute/good/professional! Maybe if I cut them on the bias instead they will be a little more flexible?!
PLUS the skirt has to be taken in AGAIN which requires me basically taking it apart! UGH! I don't know if it will get done or not to be honest as I'm also working everyday this week too... oh well, keep calm and carry on :-) ------ Brother Innovis 1250D
