Does this pattern need a full bust adjustment? I'm 5'3", 34G, wear size 14 blouse off the rack, but measure for size 20 in a pattern (which rarely fits). Will wear as a lightweight jacket over dress pants at the office.

Yes, you will need an FBA. Take your under arm(upper bust) measurement. Buy your pattern in accordance with that upper bust measurement. Then do the FBA. You will have a much better fit. Even if the finished garment measurements compare to yours, you will still need to give your bust the length it needs. An FBA is something us larger busted ladies just can't ignore if we want a nice fit without the front of the garment hiking up.

Thank you, JTink! I am enrolled in the Bust Adjustment online class that begins tomorrow, so I will have the chance to ask for some tips. I have no idea how to adjust for this pattern style. If you have any suggestions, they are more than welcome!

Again, thanks for the reply to my post. I love the feedback.

Sorry I didn't see your post earlier. If you haven't yet gotten around to making this pattern, I am getting ready to sew it and wanted to share a few insights about the pattern pieces.

If you look at the finished illustration, the seam which joins the upper and lower pattern pieces appears to be straight. However, the upper pattern piece actually curves outward at the apex of the bust, giving you a place where you can adjust your cutting lines somewhat. (I'm between a size 10 and 12 based on upper chest measurement, but I may have to swing out to a size 16 at the full bust to make sure I have room to breathe.)

This may not provide all the extra room you need, but it's nice to know that at least there is a starting point already built in. Here are the measurements as printed on the tissue for sizes 8 through 16.

Bust: 37.6" (size 8); 38.5 (size 10); 40" (size 12); 42" (size 14); 44" (size 16).

Back measurement at bust line: 18" (size 8); 18.5" (size 10); 19.25" (size 12); 20.25" (size 14); 21.5" (size 16).

With these measurements, you might be able to get a better idea of how much you will need to add to the front. Good luck! I hope to start sewing later today (May 13) and will post a review when I'm done. Fingers crossed!

PS - For what it's worth, the back piece is NOT cut on the fold, so this will give you a place to add or remove extra width in the upper back and bust area as needed. Also, starting at the waistline, the center back seam tapers outward slightly; it doesn't fall straight down. This will probably provide a nice drape over the bum.

Kate, please let us know how yours turns out. I'm also dealing with an odd ball front and trying to figure out how to work in an FBA.

The question isn't your bra size, but your pattern cup size and the amount of ease you desire. What is your high bust measurement and what is your full bust measurement? If there is more than 3" diff fence between them, you should consider an fba. But it also depends on how much ease you would like. So compare your fill bust to he finished garment measurements too.
