Has anyone sewn a pattern?

After waiting for months I just finally got my copy of the Madeleine Vionnet book. At the price, I was thinking that I would get real usable patterns like a Burda magazine. Instead there's only a line drawing of the pattern pieces. It's only slightly better than the pattern outlines you get in the layout portion of a pattern instruction.

Since this isn't the first print of the book, has anyone figured out how to turn these into real patterns? I've searched the board and there were ideas but I don't think I read anyone who had made one of the pattern.

It looks as though it might be a good idea to have an actual Vionnet to disassemble, as this writer describes in her article for Threads: She actually met the aged Vionnet, who gave her her choice of two gowns! And she had access to the actual patterns to copy.

But here's a lady who has made the Petal Dress and has pics of herself wearing it.

Incredibly enough, there is an actual 1928 McCall's pattern by Vionnet!

Here's a review of a PR member made Vionnet dress from the Kirk book. I believe I've seen other ones too.

I have had the book for seveal years. I actually bid on it on ebay...my very first time... and actually pushed on "0" an extra time during the last few seconds. Needless to say I "won" the book.

I have not tried to make anything from the "patterns" but vow to do "sew." Am looking forward to enjoying the links posted.

From that Japanese book:

There are also diagrams showing how the pieces are assembed

(Um, let's just say that I obtained a copy of dubious provenance, solely for the purposes of this post and leave it at that.)

Thanks everyone for all the great links, pics and info. It does look like the Japanese book is much better for the patterns. If you're into the biographical information the American book is better.

Now I'm torn. I really don't love the styles enough to own both books at $70 each. That's a lot of money. What should I do?

International Shipping rates from Amazon Japan

3000 + the book at 2940

about 75 to 80 dollars. Yikes.

Ah-- amason US does have it, through

third parties for ever so slightly less. Shop around.

I've seen the muslins the author made for the Vionnet book modeled by a slender petite woman several years ago at a lecture in New York City. They fit beautifully and, even in plain old cotton muslin, flowed beautifully. You might check Threads for back issues and/or online features about Vionnet. I believe that Threads had an article with a Vionnet scarf pattern in it that totally confused many readers and required corrections but I don't know which issue it was in and can't check for it right now.

I was told by someone knowledgeable that if you want to actually sew any of the dresses, the Japanese book is the only way to go. The drawings in the English language version are apparently not accurate.
