Date: 9/8/12 11:06 AM Last year at the Renaissance festival, my husband spotted this silk shirt, but it wasn't available in his size, so he's asked me to replicate it (you may have seen my fabric hunt post in the Fabrics forum!). It's much more fitted and less voluminous than most men's Renfair shirts:
The closest I've come in the Big 4 is B4486, but the sleeves are still too full:
My initial plan was just to draft out all the excess fullness, but last night it occurred to me that the PR pattern gurus might have a better suggestion! I don't even know where to begin looking for menswear outside the Big 4.
Anyone run across something similar? I can tweak details like the collar and neck opening; the fit/silhouette is more critical.

Date: 9/8/12 5:25 PM I think you are on the right track - draft to remove the fullness, and make the sleeves without gathers. You might want to peg the back a bit to make it hang straighter - I learned this trick from an Islander shirt pattern. The adjustment is minor, but it makes a difference in how the shirt hangs....the back is tapered about 1" from the arm to the hem. This shirt would look great in a rayon.

Date: 9/9/12 10:18 AM There is one in the current BurdaStyle envelope patterns -- Burda 7525 that has the slimmer fit but you would have to swap out the buttons for the eyelets and lacing.
There is an OOP Burda as well that is fitted and has the lacing -- I'm not at home right now but will try to remember to look up the pattern # when I get back from vacation. If I don't just send me a PM or post here to remind me.

Date: 9/9/12 7:04 PM You might want to try a regular pull over --KS 3250, eliminate collar and hood but keep the neck facing and add eyelets and cord. Make in a silk or rayon. KS 3817 could work too except you would need to eliminate the collar and the trim and sew it in the thinner fabric and perhaps make it a little longer. |

Date: 9/10/12 10:37 AM Burda 8461 is the one I was thinking of -- I've used this pattern several times and have had great results each time. It is OOP but if you can find a copy it is well worth it.
I will be pulling this pattern out again shortly to make DH some casual shirts for Scottish Country Dancing to wear with his kilt for the less formal occasions. I'll be sure to get some photos and to review it at that time.
On another note -- we went to the Bristol Renaissance Festival just outside Kenosha, WI while we were on holidays. The costuming is amazing -- we are hoping to work a Ren Faire into each of our vacations in the future so I think I will be making myself and DH something suitable to wear as time permits.
I'm sure I'll be back with many questions when the time comes -- ------
