Why can't a sewing machine Be more like a serger?

Date: 9/8/12 8:44 PM Apologies to Rogers and Hammerstein, but Professor Higgins' song "Why Can't a Woman Be More Like a Man?" comes blaring into my head (when I'm not hearing PR people talking to me) whenever I have to find a third or fourth hand to hold thread tails and two or three pieces of fabric together at once. Or when I want to sew really fast or when I want the feed dogs to just grab the fabric themselves and not make me have to push, pull and drag it through. Then there are the times when my serger is so loud and I miss a key point or worse, a good joke in a podcast I am listening to or when I have a hard time threading it or when I need 18 spools of thread (OK, I only have a 4 thread serger, but YKWIM ) And don't talk to me about skipped stitches on the cover stitch. Why can't it be like my sewing machines and just power over seams? (My nod to My Fair Lady) In other words, I do not like serging. I find it boring. I would rather sew. But, I need nice serged seams so I have to do it. Tonight, however, I will sew and put off serging until the morning. I actually missed the more open visability at the needle drop, and the ability to pivot at the drop of a hat, and it was hard for me to get more focusing eye wise on that knife v.s. my needle, but then I got used to that kind of stuff, so I guess it's always something. I actually would like split feed dogs with differential feed(like on a serger) though on all my sewing machines. I think that would be useful for me there. If I come up to a big lump or a bump while coverstitching, I actually will sometimes use a plastic jean a ma jag or a piece of folded up fabric or cardboard as a jig, and just turn the fly wheel by hand right there, to avoid skipped stitches.

And definitely wish I could see where I am sewing as well as I can with the sm. My cover stitch has a clear foot (an option I should have asked to be included in the purchase price, but had to back a week later and buy separately) so visibility is great there. Can't seem to get my bump jumper to work really well with the CS, so may need to look at a different version than the one I have or make a custom tool for it. Again though, if the serger threaded as easily as the CS, it would be heavenly.
