I have been to the fabric district in LA many times. For those of you who know it, I am wondering where I can find stores like those in NYC and Boston. I just love the stores that have a huge selection of $1.00/yd and $2.00/yd fabric, and would love to have some sources like that in the northeast, where I live. I have a feeling that the lower east side in NYC would be the place, if it is can anyone be a little more specific for me as to streets and intersections I can start at. And, I have heard that Chinatown in Boston has some stores like that, but does anyone have any more info than that. Thanks in advance!

I am so lucky to live in Jackson Heights, Queens -- 132 different ethnic groups, gay and straight, many of us are still sewing, and we all love good quality at a cheep price.

Three stores within two blocks of each other. Check them out HERE

I live here and even I can't help myself. Michael Miller botanical cotton: 60 wide for $2.99 a yard. Or some authentic logo Chanel jacket lining. Buttery tan ultra suede down to $2 a yard. Yes, you'll get 3 yards of everything but you must buy it NOW -- it just won't be there tomorrow (but there'll be something else...)

Honestly I would not spend your time on the L.e.s. for fabric. I'm not really a discount fabric shopper myself but I know alot of people find really good prices at random stores on 38th and 39 th in the garment district side by side with the more expensive stores.

Tday i saw a man with a sandwich sign saying that there is a big sale at 240 W37th with fabrics as low as .50/yard. That is the same block as Metro textile ( 265 onm the 9th floor) It's also worth looking for the stores run by h+M textiles in various locations in the garment district...the stores are a jumbled mess but the prices are great..and you can negotiate.

Jadamo00, I've been wanting to get out to those shops for a while and thought this last rainy Saturday was a good opportunity.
But I'm shopping for some materials to make my boys some hoodies, comfy pants. I called the shops and they said the had no knits.

Does that sound right to you based on what you've seen? I hate to spend 90 minutes on the train (coming from Washington Heights) and you *know* I would end up spending my project $$ on something other than sweatshirt fleece!!

no knits.

Oh crud. NONE of the three?

Really sorry about that. It may be that they have them in the basement and don't feel like making the seasonal switch yet. In the brutal heat of July, I hadda beg the brothers at Liz to go down the basement and bring me up snips of corduroy, of which I bought a grand total of one yard (I only needed contrast cuffs and collar for a barn coat).

Well, you did right by calling first; I'd hate for you to come all the way and be disappointed.

...although, I gotta tell ya: $1.99 for a half a pound of Peanut Chikki (nut-packed honey brittle) at Patel Bros Grocery really sweetens the trip.

One of the H+M stores maybe on 39th had wonderful sweater knits this summer. they were soft and beautiful...some even had camo prints..they were soft wool blend knits in grey over printed with cool prints...I look for the stores with the badly hand lettered signs...

Happy to go with you. Leu, I'm on the UWS.. so we can meet and go together. saturdays are not a good day to go to the garment district. many of the shops are owned by Sabbath observers and are closed on Saturdays.

I am in the garment district nearly every Wednesday in the middle of the day.. i would be willing to go with you on a Monday holiday.
