A friend asked about terminology and I said they could find it at PR, but I guess I was thinking of the fabric glossary. I know a good basic sewing book would be great, but I have a hunch someone here knows of a good website where one can learn the difference between interfacing and interlining and the bobbin race from the feed dogs.

The Reader's Digest Complete Guide To Sewing should have just about everything and anything you might need to add to your own personal glossary. You can find it at Amazon, eBay and some book stores.

Another possibility is Simplicity's Simply The Best Sewing Book. This one you can usually find where fabric is sold.

I agree that a good general sewing reference book is very useful. Check a few sewing references out of your local library before you purchase. Different people prefer different formats: photos vs. drawn illustrations, for example. Everyone's learning style is a bit different, so you want to choose a book that appeals to your personal learning style.

In the meantime, some online sewing term resources that may prove useful:

Sewing Dictionary, sewingpatterns.com
Glossary of Sewing Terms (PDF), Texas Cooperative Extension
The Sewing Dictionary
SEW-lutiions Guidelines - multiple short articles/tutorials at sewing.org.
Wikipedia Glossary of Sewing Terms

Thanks CM - this person has recently done a major de-clutter and probably doesn't want to buy a lot more books. I was hoping to finally lure him (yes, it is a male sewing friend. Rare bird, but hoping he might join our "flock") to PR. I have hinted a lot and suggested a lot. Hope he drops in and finds out what a great resource we have here. And nice people too, of course.
