What is a dongle? What is a cam? Dongle, especially. sounds like baby talk-or a euphemism!

I see these terms often enough here on PR-inquiring minds want to know!

a dongle looks a bit like a flash drive, fits in the usb slot, and it proves to the computer that you are the rightful owner and user of embroidery software. hence you can't re-distribute it to some one else, since it won't work without the dongle.

A cam is a ball (of a sort) that fits inside an older embroidery or sewing machine and produces designs. Think of it a bit like an old player piano roll; which had holes in it, and when you scrolled through it (and air blew through it) the piano would play. Likewise the cam has a design that the machine will duplicate.

A dongle is like a flash drive that contains the key to allow the embroidery software open on your computer. A cam is a small, typically plastic, usually round item that attaches to a vintage mechanical machine allowing it to do zig zag or deco stitches.

' This brings to mind.. you are not the first to wonder about the ''dongle''

Somewhere back in the archives there is an entire thread.. really off beat and funny.. by a member that called herself Fiddling Lizzie if I recall that correctly..

You might enjoy her take on this entire subject..

A few computers-- mostly desktops-- have an USB port inside the case, If you computer is so equipped, you may want to put the dongle in that port-- that way, you'll never lose it, unless your computer goes missing. If you do lose the dongle, you may have to repurchase the computer software.
