I might make seat covers for my OH's new truck. BUTT, the front seats have airbags in the seats. Commercial seat covers take this into account but I don't know how, unless I buy one, examine it, and take it back I guess.

Anybody do this and know how to handle the airbag?

Airbags in the SEATS? How does that work?? Are the airbags for safety (which I can't imagine) or for adjusting the seat?

Edited to add: well I learned something new today.

Side airbags in seats

Wow, you didn't know cars had airbags for safety? They've been around for years, maybe 40 years. Newer vehicles now have them in the seat, along the side. As well as the steering wheel, the dashboard, the roof, the side doors. In an accident they go off and the occupants are cushioned in a big marshmallow. :)

I'm going to call our insurance company. I've got a couple of ideas but don't want to compromise our insurance. I would like full coverage of the seats but may have to leave the sides open.

ETA: Sorry, miss-read your post. It was the seat part you didn't know about. Yes, they are relatively new in the seat.

I'm with Pinkytoo -- Air bags in the seats, indeed! Airbags are hardly a surprise, but I'd only ever heard of them located in the dash and in the door.

Located in the seat itself was a new one to me, too. In our household, we're driving 2 cars with 200,000-plus miles each - much too aged for those new-fangled seat air bags.

The webpage Pinkytoo linked to is rather interesting. The vendor says they must charge you $11.70 to make alterations in a standard seat cover to accommodate the seat air bags. I'm curious to know what alteration they make. The relatively low price implies that the alteration is not especially difficult to make.

So, in case this might help anyone else; seat covers on such a vehicle are not a good idea. The owner's manual for our truck says to NOT use accessory seat covers on the front seats. It makes no allowance for those with the adjustment for the airbag. Thus, even if we had those special covers our insurance company could deny a claim. I called our insurance and was told an apron type of cover that did not fasten around the sides would probably be OK.
