I have a turtle neck sweater (acrylic) that has a neck piece which is too high for my short neck. Have thought of removing piece and shortening it from bottom and then resewing it, but hesitate because I don't want to ruin it as color and fit were hard to find. Have tried rolling it up, but it doesn't look good. Any suggestions as to if this would work or any other suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

Thank you

It should work as long as the neck piece is a straight tube, so the circumference of the tube is the same all the way up. I have made a couple of turtlenecks and the neck piece is just sewn to the neck at the bottom of the neck piece.

I agree with Pinkytoo. However, before you detach the turtleneck, run a line of staystitching close to the neckline of your bodice so you don't stretch it. I saw that advice on Sewing with Nancy.

I was going to say exactly the same thing! Except I was also going to suggest staystitching the collar/tube, too--the tube seam edges are vulnerable to stretching/misshaping. I have a set of ribbed cuffs I bought to put on a coat, and when I went to finish the raw edges, they totally stretched out, even though I was careful. Not a big deal b/c the seam was hidden inside the coat sleeve... but definitely NOT something you want to happen on a turtleneck!

Maybe you could run a few lines of gathering stitches vertically, to kind of ruche the collar a little. It would bring down the height somewhat without having to take the garment apart.

I couldn't find a photo of exactly what I was thinking, but something like the ruched sleeves on this sweater:

LEAVE IT

if anyone asks, sigh and say in your most dismissive tone, "you clearly do not understand fashion"

If you like the top but not the collar, cut the collar in front center from the top edge to the seam, and finish the cut edges, so that the collar is like a shirt collar. (Hope that makes sense.) For a more offbeat look, cut the back center of the collar instead- this will give you a more turtleneck-y (?) look.
