in more recent projects I have been learning to look at the finished measurements more closely to help me judge the level of ease.

The dress I have been work on the moment is support to be fairly fitted. My waist is a size 16, so it cut it at the waist to this size. Having had trouble with getting my back to fit in the past as my weight is at the front and my back fairly curved I basted the sides together to check the fit.

Sure enough, the back was roomy and the front looked fine. I decided to follow a hunch, and sure enough, when I recut the back only side seams to a size 12 (!) it fit beautifully. Surely taking it down by two dress sizes should mean the overall width would go below my waist measurement total?

Whatever the reason, I'm sold. This is a really easy way in future to adjust for my back and I'm going to try it again. When I've taking in the side seams in the past the seams have not ended up straight. I've read about other people cutting out one size for their back and another for their front.

Has this worked for anyone else, and do you have any advice?

Oh maybe that would work for me. I have sway back & short back too. Thank you for the tip!

That's surprising. I've normally taken a wedge out at the centre back of 2cm to zero at the side seam, and then added this back to the centre back hem.
So, were you using knit fabric or wovens.
And, what pattern did you use?

I've been making vogue 8743. I was looking at the pattern pieces and my thinking went as follows: my sides from the front aren't curved. So the side seams from the front shouldnt be curved either. However, from the back I do look like I have more of a waist.

I figured that for this reason it was worth altering the shape of the back overall at the waist to a smaller size to see if it worked. I'll get my housemate to take more pictures later to illustrate the fit I got if that helps.

Wow. I love the dress.
Based on what you've said, I can see why you went to a smaller size. And frankly if this has worked, that's the outcome your wanted.
The pictures will be handy to see.
Cheers.

If it works, then why not. But doesn't smaller back would mean smaller armscyes and smaller neck opening too?

I had a request for pictures when I finished the dress - if you are interested here are a few including a couple which show side and back profiles.

I'm really pleased with how comfy it is, as the front still has enough ease for me to comfortably move around despite having gone down two sizes for the back.
