I work as an SLP in a school, and have a small room as my therapy room. The problem is, all my storage is open shelves and it's distracting and overstimulating for some of my students (some of whom are on sensory diets). I would like to make curtains to cover the shelves but the fabric must be fire resistant (fire marshall). Does anyone know of a source for fire resistant fabric?

Fire retardant fabric is not easy to find, unless you want just plain old fabric.

Another source, but many of the sites are wholesale only.

Pure wool is extremely fire resistant.

Do a search on theatrical fabrics and several sources will come up, for flame retardant fabrics used for stage curtains.

Some here.

I think your best bet is theatrical/dance shops.

we get questions like this all the time at Joann's....there is a spray you can apply to fabric. It's in our home dec. accessories area.

Hi Speech Girl!
I recently left my job sourcing and designing fabric for hotels, casinos and hospitals, and am very familiar with fire codes and flame retardant fabrics.

100% wool is flame resistant, but you'd have to check with the fire marshall in your area to see if they would allow it. Below are a list of suppliers of hotel draperies, hospital cubicle curtains and theatrical fabrics, all of which should have a number of either inherent or treated flame retardant fabrics for you to choose from. My previous employer purchased and distributed from these companies, but i think that they would sell to an individual as well.

I hope that I am not too late to help! Good luck and let me know if you need anything else!
