I fell in love with the beautiful multicolored pleated skirt in the Sept. Burda and have tons of polyester silky fabrics that are begging to be pleated into skirts, but... how? What cool gadgets are out there that can help me make my own pleats at home? I'm not about to spend the money to send my fabric to be pleated somewhere else.

I once bought a pleater board from Clotilde.com and unfortunately found it was impossible to use.

The Rajah Press Cloth also shown in the link above is used with an iron to set permanent pleats into polyester fabric, and it works quite well. I use it to set creases in my RPL pants.

I haven't tried this on silky polyester fabrics, but on the suiting type a cloth soaked in vinegar-water mix seems to set pleats pretty well.
I did the ones at the bottom of this dress like this

Its a bad photo, but the pleats were knife pleats about an inch and a quarter wide.

Cool dress, I love the 20's flair the little pleated edge gives it!

Nancy, that's discouraging that it was so hard to use. It's the only one I've been able to find so far. I was looking at the extra long one (not the mega one) since it is a better length for skirts. But even at the sale they have going on now I still think it's pricey at $45, especially if it's not that handy.

In case anyone else is wondering about the same topic I will post some of the links I found while doing a search:

Threads Article on Pleating (references the Clotide pleater)
Tutorial on Making your Own Pleater board
A better Tutorial on how to make your own pleater board
A different brand pleater

I think I will try making my own pleater board before spending any money and we'll see how it goes.

I bought that Clotilde pleater too, the extra long size. I tried it with muslin just to see how it worked and I liked it.
