I'm so intrigued by the Marfy Pattern line by McCalls but it says they are for the advanced sewer and they don't come with instructions. If being able to sew without instructions makes you an advanced sewer than I guess I'm out...but I'm curious if anyone has sewn with them and just how difficult are they. They are a bit on the pricey side so, I want to make sure what I'm getting myself into if I should purchase one.

Here's a thread about sewing with Marfy. There are other threads but only a few responses. Also you can search through patterns previously reviewed to see what people have said about them.

I've made (and reviewed) 5 Marfy patterns so far, and have many more in my queue. I'm sure in the threads mastdenman linked to you'll see something posted about the "grid" format they follow. When I first get my pattern I unfold it, match up the pieces, and then mark directly on the piece what they are. I always trace because I always need to do some sort of alteration and find it easier to add seam allowances that way.

The lack of instructions doesn't bother me at all. For technique I depend on books, online tutorials, and boards like Pattern Review. When I was learning to drive my dad would purposely get me lost, then tell me I had to figure out how to get back home without his help (and no, I didn't have a GPS). Somehow I always made it back. Marfy patterns are a bit like that. If you don't panic and just look for clues and think about what you're doing you'll figure them out. There's no reason why you couldn't leave off some of the more complicated details either, like welt pockets or bound buttonholes, if you are not comfortable doing them yet.
