Do we have a distribution logistics expert in the house? Business case!

My class has a business case, a salty snack foods manufacturer, who owns and operates 4 plants across the country. Their logistics is a total mess. We're recommending they acquire another snack food mfging company so we need to reorganize and straighten out their distribution logistics. Cross-docking is partly implemented, but not very well (by the manufacturer) and we are going to have to come up with a plan. Only none of us has a clue... HELP!!!!!!! ------ I heart Panzy, Pfaff Creative Performance, the sewing machine love of my life! I'm no expert but did do a lot of case studies in college... I'm wondering if they are looking for the recommendation to centralize distribution or even make regional distribution. From the limited info you gave, IMO acquiring another company will not 'fix' process problems. many times the company that you want to acquire looks desirable but is actually more dysfunctional than the first. Plus the merger would add a lot more chaos etc... Sometimes need to fix yourself before looking o acquire others... That being said there are a Ton of reasons for acquiring another company... Do the have th market you want to get into? Are they your supplier? Etc etc etc The 'lean' methodology is also frequently implemented to remove non-value added activities. -- Edited on 9/25/12 1:53 AM --

BUT... I'm not really sure what you are asking for? ------ 24th Nov 12 to 28th Nov 13 Fabric and patterns rules for me. Remember to shop your stash girl! My best friend's dad was a chemist on the development team at one of the big places. We got to chomp our way through the first trials of the filled snack/chip category. Later, one of our friends worked there as a potato expert. This was nearly thirty years ago that we were sampling the purple chips and such. A lot of science goes into creating the perfect potato (corn, etc) to get to the perfect snack. The company was exceedingly generous to the community. The company store was always open to room mothers and school event planners. There was a free allotment on a regular basis to church groups. One year we burned the midnight oil to pull together the usual room parent holiday parties. The afternoon before the parties, some of the teachers pulled us aside in the hall to let us know that the new teacher's room mother had informed her that day that she had used the money for personal expenses and that there would be no party. Called my contact at the big snack company and they loaded us up. All of the fast food places did the same with their little toys and snacks. Burned the midnight oil again to personalize something. Those kids made out like bandits. Fond memories of the king of salty snacks. ------ I have no idea what Apple thought I was saying so be a Peach and credit anything bizarre to auto correct.

I've also chomped my way through a load of salty snacks in the name of employment! We have a product here called Twisties that taste unreal fresh out of the flavour barrel. It was always tough come smoko (break) time. Do I have that nice crunchy apple in my bag or nip out to the factory floor and grab some twisties..... The factory I worked in also used to make potato chips for the Thai and Japanese markets. Very, very different flavours.
