I am still having periods off and on and have gained inches in my butt, thighs and belly and I don't sleep worth a darn. I quit my cleaning business after 20 years and had carpal tunnel surgery back in April. I'm finally back into the weight training and exercising hoping I can get back down two sizes. This is a real struggle with going through menopause! My hot flashes and night sweats are pretty much gone since I've been going to a hormone doctor who has me on progesterone and DHEA. He tried me on several kinds of Estriol for vaginal atrophy but it constantly made me burn so I did find some suppository thingees that work pretty well. I've noticed lately that I have acne all over and an increased sex drive. One outta two ain't bad! I thought the acne was from too much progesterone but he didn't think so. He even had me on thyroid meds thinking that's why I've gained weight but with recent blood work I don't think I had any thyroid issues. I noticed no difference so I no longer take them.

My last rant was about some bad experiences with OB/GYN's. One was in her late 20's and never even heard of bio-identical hormones, another lady was about 60 and wouldn't even look at my saliva test results and spoke badly about bio-identical hormones saying they were dangerous but then was wanting to give me an estrogen patch or the synthetic hormones which are known to cause breast cancer. I finally found a male OB/GYN that is my age. He was really very compassionate and optimistic and even said he'd be happy to work with my hormone doctor. So I had my hormone doctor fax him my latest blood work and what he has me on. I'm anxious to see what he says. I hadn't been to a male OB/GYN in 30 years but I really am comfortable with him.

Has anyone else developed acne? I always thought your skin dries out going through menopause but my face is actually oily!

I catch myself snoring with my mouth closed all the time now which keeps waking me up. My husband who sleeps with the CPAP thinks I have mild sleep apnea. Oh Lord...what next!

ah, you have my sympathy, but i can offer no good advice. I do have thyroid problems, and the synthroid helps me a lot. My regular doc put me on estrogen about 1.5 yrs ago; I don't want to stay on it too long, but it helps. I too have gained weight, but I know I can attribute that to my bad habit of having a donut in the morning, among other things. Hang in there; I feel better now, and you will too....

I work for a Naturopathic Doctor. She has quite a few patients who are going through menopause.

She does not have a one fix for all method of helping women through menopause. There are a great many variables including health history that have to be reviewed before choosing a treatment plan.

Some get Bio identical hormones, some Estriol, some 'regular hormones' some herbal remedies. In BC ND's can write prescriptions.

I hope your new GYN will find the right treatment plan for you.

My hormone doctor is like a naturophatic doctor and he can write prescriptions. I'm hoping my GYN and him can work together.

Not going through it yet, but I have been on Depo-Provera for years so I don't know how I will know.

But, I am continuously amazed at how doctor's opinions vary. I had had the same doctor for over 10 years, then he retired and I had to find a new one who took my insurance. Boy do their opinions vary!

I wish that was my problem!! I'm going to see my GYN next month, and I certainly plan to ask him about NO drive at all. I can take the night sweats, even gaining weight and all that. But, please give me back my libido!!

I can't say about the sex drive, but the acne is due to too much progesterone. Are you having breast(not nipple) tenderness too? How much/often are you taking the progesterone? Also, if the dose of thyroid is too low you may not notice much difference in how you feel.
You need to talk to your hormone doctor about repeating the saliva testing. It sounds like your hormones are still off.
The young OB-GYN who did my surgery put me on straight estrogen, not an estrogen-progesterone compound which my Pham.D could not understand. I was constantly hungry & it raised my blood sugar which makes me feel really depressed. I was on very low carbs at the time & still gained 3 lbs. None of the MDs would listen to me. I found John from a coworker who is into alternative medicine.

Estrogen alone can be prescribed after a hysterectomy, otherwise a combination is prescribed.

I agree....I was told that you have to take progesterone if you are taking estrogen.

No breast tenderness or hunger issues. I also thought the acne was from too much progesterone so I decreased my dosage. My holistic doctor says that is not so. I tend to disagree with him though. I haven't done the saliva testing in about a year. He has me doing blood work. I don't know which is more accurate though.

I only take estrogen but I have had a hysterectomy.

Here is my rant.... I had my surgery when I was about 30. They put me on premarin (which eventually caused my gallbladder to go bad, I had it removed). I went on the patch somewhere in my late 40's. At about 50 when I went to get a patch refill, the doctor I went to see said "We do not give estrogen anymore, you can only have an anti-depressant".

I did not want the anti-depressant so I went off the estrogen.

BIG mistake. Five years later my cholesterol was through the roof and I have full blown osteoporosis.

I am now back on an estrogen patch for two or so years and feeling much better again, but my bones will never be the same again and my cholesterol never did come back down on its own.
