Just got myself up to date with the rest of the world and bought myself my first smart phone.

I have never felt so stupid in my entire life as I did when I had to ask the sales guy how do I answer phone calls. I suspect this thing is gonna take me awhile to learn!

Oh don't worry, my husband just updated his phone, and he is a smartphone fan. He also couldn't figure out how to answer his newest phone! and he is in his early thirties :)

Absolutely nothing compares to the low blow my ego took when I bought the embroidery machine I went from being totally competent in my sewing space to - well......

Don't feel stupid, everyone gets confused with their smartphone! It's perfectly normal. I still feel lost with my Android tablet.

You'll get the hang of it and maybe even have fun with some apps

I was very late to the mobile phone. First use was when a friend lent me one as I waited outside DDs flat for the locksmiths (she was in hospital). I had to collar a passing teenager to show me how to work it. I was expecting surprise, raised eyebrows, mocking laughter from the group of friends she was with, but no, with great patience she explained you had to press the off button to turn it on. Who designs these things anyway?

Kids. Really, that's who does it. In the western world, it is second nature to them from babyhood these days.

But even in other parts of the world, as in some poverty-stricken regions where the illiteracy rate is high, it has been demonstrated that street kids are naturally ready for this kind of thing. Take a look at this rather famous story.

People snark about smartphones that they do a bunch of things well--just not making phone calls!

I have one, and get irritated at how often the different apps insist on updating, changing the look and function of the interface so you have to tap different points and follow a different route to get to the same place. (Plainly I'm settling into middle age--You kids get off my damn touchscreen!!)

That said, I love having maps in my pocket and probably can't go back.

There is a bit of a learning curve. You can find LOTS of videos on YouTube where enthusiastic smartphone users demonstrate the various features.

Soon we will be seeing this:

From a Class Schedule on 21st century:

Telephone 101.
Students will be shown the latest in phone technology. Highlighted will be Turning the phone on, turning the phone off, answering the phone, as well as other uses.

A workshop is included where students will get hands on experience with handling the various devices, discovering how they operate, and, most important, how to answer the phone when a call comes in.

This class is not open to those under 25 years of age. Class size is limited to 30.

Tuesdays and Thursdays 10 A.M. to noon.
Room 16 of the Alexander Graham Bell Building
