help with serger purchase...interested in juki

I want the coverstitch for hemming knits. I see some people say to get separate serger and coverstitch machine, but I see so many mixed reviews on the coverstitch only machines. If I get 2 separate machines I would probably get the Juki 655, but what coverstitch machine? Or just go with the 735?

I have the 735 and love it. Until recently (the last 2 weeks) I would have never wanted both machines. When I sewed a project, I started at the beginning and sewed until I finished, thus setting it up to coverstitch at the very end and finishing the project. Well... now I have a grandchild and last week I could see where a separate coverstitch would be useful. I had 3 baby items to make, and they only take an hour to make, but didn't want to keep setting up for the cover stitch. I just got to the point on all three where I needed to coverstitch and then stop, and I did all three coverstitches at the same time at the end, changing the thread each time. I had a Bernina serger/coverstitch before this and hated it. It was so much harder to change from serger to cover. The 735 is so simple.

I have 4 daughters, so sometimes I make then all the same dress. Sometimes I sew them one ay a time and other times I do them together. I also make clothes for me and a lot of baby items. I still can't decide. I wish Juki made a coverstitch machine that was reasonable. I just haven't heard great things about the brother and Janome coverstitch machines. Still undecided. I have to admit I'm leaning towards an all in one because I don't want to have to get so many spools of thread. I know everyone loves their Evolution. I'm wondering if there is a lot of difference between the evolution and the Judi 735. Obviously the jet air threading.

They make a great team. I have had a Pfaff serger for 20 years and several years ago purchased a Pfaff 4874 combo machine. The sergers are wonderful, but the combo is too tempermental. It has never been consistent and other owners agree. I prefer the separate machines and thread is no problem. I use serger thread for both and just tie on, release tensions and pull through. I have never totally rethreaded either machine. Threading is fast and probably easier than converting from serger to coverstitch on a combo. The Brother is so reliable and easy. Yesterday I shortened 8 t shirts for my brother and it was a piece of cake. I have no problems with tension release and hardly ever have to change any settings. Love them both. If you want to save money you could get the Juki 644 without the lay in threading. It has great reviews on this site. I researched for a long time and bought them both sight unseen. You can read the manuals online first and that helps. Good luck!

I actually almost bought a babylock evolution today. If the dealer would have come down another $400 it would have been mine. Have to say I'm leaning towards a babylock now. I'm so indecisive.

It sewed really nice. You don't have to buy differen't needles. It takes the standard household sewing machine needle. Later I had the chance to upgrade to a Janome 1000cp and like the wider harp. This machine take special needles. I sold my other one.
