How do you decide which pattern block to make?

I have Quilt Design Wizard and it has several choices in each catagory. These are: four patch nine patch simple blocks log cabin pictorical square in a square stars unequal 9 patch x's and diagonials I can rotate, change colors, resize, and I am sure other things I have not discovered yet. I make up a pattern I like, find color choices, and then either save and print or not save and try again. I do a lot of Try Again. So far, this is all I have liked that I have made in QDW. floral pinwheels These are just examples. The pinwheels is a play on color type. I kind of like the blues best for that one. How does a person decide??? ------ Quilting is relaxing to me. I love to play with fabrics, patterns and colors. You're learning the software well! How to decide? Right now I'm using mostly charm packs so it's easy for me. I'm just doing the disappearing nine patch. Then I go buy fabric, and go from there and make the quilt top.

I decided to add sashing this time around. I have not made one with sashing before. I think I'll try another pattern and post it when I get it done. I can just hear DH now. Don't use all the colored ink in the printer!!!! Diana, Is there a way to send the chosen pattern to either my desktop or to my email? I have not found a function like that yet. While I do not mind printing them out and taking pictures so I can show my hubby what I am learning, I'd like a better way of doing things if it is in the program. ------ Quilting is relaxing to me. I'll take a closer look at the program and see. Edited to Add: You can't save as an image file. At least I don't see that option. You can save the quilt as a project file, then open it up and show him. I always worry about making that first cut, that actual commitment to a pattern, that I missed something that would use the fabric's print better. I had to finally tell (yell at) myself that fabric in a quilt is better than having it sit uncut on a shelf. I chose the pattern, the sashing and the fabric blocks in prints I was pretty sure I could find. If not, I can come very close to the ones I like. I can't wait to start on another quilt. I need to finish the binding on both of my other ones as well. I can't stretch out my left arm enough to do much yet. I am much better than I was and want to get back to cutting/piecing/sewing/ quilting, etc. However, right now, I need the ice pack... ------ Quilting is relaxing to me. PortlandMaine   Advanced Beginner ME USA Member since 1/29/11 Posts: 1644	Login to reply to this post Like this post Date: 9/27/12 6:11 PM I dont follow that method at all -- I like to look at quilts in the quilt museam collections, quilts in books, online -- through searches .. and when I see a pattern I like -- I find out how to make it my own and .. thats how i do it. Then, I do more searches to find instruction on how to make that block ... I never made blocks till recently -- I just sat down and started to sew. For example Jenny Doan does a Irish chain demo on youtube .. I wanted to use scraps instead of larger pieces -- I could not make my blocks using strip sets.
