Storing/filing patterns...any ideas?!

Sure, a dedicated file cabinet just the right size would be nice....but who has room for that?

I use tabbed manila folders to create categories and put the patterns in-between. Big 4 envelopes can go upright with two beside each other, and most larger envelopes and printed-out patterns fit sideways. ------ I've moved! The patterns fit in the same way. The patterns I am planning to use now have been placed in an easily accessible box.. older or no rush patterns can be stored in a separate box and be stacked underneath or stored in another room. I might get some too. I got the blue boxes from staples so it would look nice in the room.... and I'll know it's catagorized as sewing rather than office work. ------ SewWannabe-SewReady

Secondly, I just looked at your blog and all I can think to say is WOW!!! I'm impressed!!! You are truly blest with a great gift! My office is decorated to look kind of medieval, and sitting on the floor under the window I have a wooden box from Hobby Lobby that looks like an ancient chest. For years it sat empty, until the big paper shopping bag that held my pattern stash finally gave up the ghost. I looked at the patterns, looked at the box, looked at the patterns again... then flipped up the lid and stuck them all inside! They fit perfectly, and I was able to corral my entire collection of Big 4 costume patterns in that chest. Win-win! ------ ~Gem in the prairie

(and everybody! for the awesome! pattern storage ideas!) Piano was truly my best and (only) claim to fame and lifelong career and passion until a hand injury from playing a broken piano 3 months at a church..... So, yep! Gotta create! NOw I'm into sewing. My mother and grandmother were expert seamstresses. I always sewed, but now I'm actually trying to be neater and better. New equipment sure helps! (Babylock serger, & Viking Sapphire-both new)

glenj AUSTRALIA Member since 1/6/08 Posts: 802	Login to reply to this post Like this post Date: 9/29/12 9:11 AM my first instinct is CULL.I know it seems drastic, having done it myself I can attest to the fact you will still have a trunk load.I used to have 2 tiny containers that held about 15 patterns tops,now i litterally have an old steamer trunk(great grandmothers) that fit them in beautifully.I keep going through them and ask myself those really hard questions like,"self, you only have limited time on this earth ,do you want to waste it sewing something average, or something fabulous?"I then give away average and what was I thinking patterns and only keep fabulous and TNT'S.The trunk is never empty but I also don't get extra storage to fit more stuff.They all fit in lines and usually sorted by type (kids, sleepwear,skirts, tops ,dresses menswear.....Good luck with finding a system that works for you G.
