Favorite Baby Gift To Make Baby Pattern Favorite

I make one of these to include in every baby shower gift. Here is a pic of one of the recipients. It's a baby changing pad/keep dry pad. I use PUL on one side and minky on the other. It's about 18x24 inches. I round the corners and bind with cute foldover elastic. The pad will fit in a diaper bag, great for quick diaper changes or under baby when she sleeps. ------ My grandmother taught me to sew when I was 10, and I've been sewing ever since.

For mom I like to make a coiled bowl and fill with lotion, candle, day-out coupons. For nursing moms, a cover-up is easy to make with online tutes. You can buy a length of boning at JA's--it goes inside the top edge to hold it open.

I found that using terry cloth on one side and flannel on the otherside were the most popular. I embroider a little motif at the bottom. All the moms love them. Something that isn't repeated at showers.

This tutorial is more or less how I make mine. One thing she doesn't emphasize at the beginning is to leave an opening on one of the sides to turn the blanket right sides out. Instead of just ditch stitching or using a deco stitching, I frequently sew larger rick rack.. I sometimes add a bit of batting in the middle. I use spray adhesive on the smaller peice when I do this. I always sew at least an X from corner to corner as well, even when I don't use batting, to help the blanket hold its shape and stay together. Caution though. I use flannel for these blankets and I pre-wash mine. I have had a lot of trouble with the fabric stretching, especially the smaller peice. Maybe I am too zelous with the iron and/or the steam - not sure - or I need to back off the foot pressure. But that is another reason for using the large rick rack. I can hide any "bubbles"!! Anyway, most Mom's love them. They are a great size for the car and when baby is a bit older they like to throw them on the floor for playtime. In the tutorial she says 10 minutes to sew the blanket. Mine is more like 2-3 hours but I am a slow, meticulous sewer. Part of it is, I also like to finish my seams inside because flannel can fray so much. Also, when I sew the rick rack down, I sew it from point to point as much as possible in the center of the tape so it doesn't lift up. On the back side, it looks like giant zig zag stitching. They really are cute and there are a lot of possibilites for jazzing them up. I have tinkered with the idea of adding in prairie points but haven't done that yet.
