$225 Overnighter for $15 Overnight Bag from Stash

Fully aware that the total cost of all things I might put in an overnight bag does not approach $225, I knew such a purchase was not a consideration. So off to The Stash for fabric, zippers, batting, notions and the Destashification Overnighter was created: Total cost was less than $15 as I had to purchase the blue strapping for the handles. When making weekender bags for Christmas gifts I used heavy interfacing but the bottom did not stay sturdy very long I guess. What did you use? ............. To make the base as sturdy as possible, I put a double layer of Trimtex in a "sleeve" created by the not-quite-ultra-suede base and its lining. When I wanted a bag to have a very sturdy base - like these grocery getter bags - I cut plexiglass to fit However, plexiglass is not forgiving and may break. I would worry about it cracking when being "placed" into an already crowded overhead airplane bin. The handles I used on most bags have two layers. For the Overnighter, the wider layer is a green twill tape and the upper layer is the blue webbing or strapping. I sewed them together and then sewed the outer layer (the green) to the bag, reinforcing across both layers in a few places. Sewing through the bag fabric, the double pockets, the twill tape and originally the Trimtex taxed my machine, but after I replaced the needle, it sewed through all the layers fine! Can I chip in with what I have found handy to add firmness to the bottom of bags? I had a roll of the stuff you lay under wood flooring left over, which is a thin layer of a dense foam with a layer of a plastic on one side. I have used this and its ok. (on a tangent I have some of it cut to my cutting table size for using a tracing wheel to mark through patterns too.) More on the DIY store possibilities, it occurs to me that the very dense foam used in building insulation would also make good flat bag bases. ------ so many patterns, clamouring to be sewn http://patternpandemonium.wordpress.com/

And, marine grade plywood scraps, it is extremely stable since there are no voids. ------ I have no idea what Apple thought I was saying so be a Peach and credit anything bizarre to auto correct.
