I have been asked to suggest a fabric for some new curtains to be used in a cafe at a senior center.

I am looking for a curtain fabric with square holes that are real holes, not only sheer areas. This should not be too hard to find. But when searching the internet for "drapery fabrics holes", "modern lace drapery fabrics" etc, I just don't find anything. Have you got a suggestion? English is not my maternal language - maybe there is some very, very evident word that I just don't remember or don't know.

I don't know about square holes, but round holes are called "eyelets". Try searching and see if it resembles what you want.

Square holes I think would be called "filet" as in filet crochet. Maybe?

mesh perhaps. English is my mother tongue and the choices still drive me crazy.

This kind of fabric is hard to find in the US. In fact, this one is all I have found in half an hour of searching the web.

I tried search terms like 'lattice weave' or 'ribbon weave' or 'basket weave, and this Japanese square eyelet stuff is all I have found that might even come close to what you're looking for.

I have noticed that European countries have much more variety in openwork curtain fabric than we do.

Do you mean sheer fabric with a regular pattern of holes (as much or more holes as fabric) through which the curtain rod can be woven? There is no need to sew in a rod pocket.
Unfortunately, I can't remember what it is called; though I had some many years ago.

I'm wondering if you mean net curtains?

If you mean old-fashioned cotton curtain net, the kind used for embroidering/"darning" those 1930s lace tablecloths, I want some too, in ecru. I have not been able to find any. If anyone does, let me know.
