I'm a new and young sewer (only 20, so I know close to nothing) and I recently inherited my Nana's old sewing machine and know next to nothing about it. It's in a small table, metal, robin's egg blue, the only name on it is Sears Kenmore on the main body, Sears Roebuck on the underside with the model number 566 9202. The back of the motor has more clues it's a single amp motor and the number there is 5185. Also, it has made in japan written on the side. I have no idea what this all means but hopefully someone else does. What I mostly need to know is how to get it serviced (or learn how) and where I can find replacements for the missing bobbin plate and one of the thread guides. (I live in south-eastern NC) Over all it's in pretty good shape (though really dirty) and when I put a needle in it, attempted to thread it, and plugged it in it ran and the needle moved but it did not actually sew. (most likely I simply threaded it wrong, i'm used to my mil's shark intelli-sew with it's arrows pointing to everything lol)

Your machine from Nana sounds lovely. Sew-Classic (http://www.sew-classic.com) should have a bobbin plate & maybe a thread guide. She also has other items you may need, like a new belt if yours is dry.
She does have a guide to cleaning the old machines available also.

Hi,is your Sears Kenmore model number only 566 9202 ? Usually there is a dot after the first three digits, like 148. or 158. or 385., please look here to see what I'm talking about. If you can post the complete model number, including a dot, maybe there is even a free pdf manual available online for you to help you with threading the machine. Here are several pages of old(er) Kenmore sewing machines,do you see a model like your Kenmore on any of the pages ?

Depending on the age of your Nana's Kenmore, parts may still be available at Sears parts online.

Those old Kenmores are good machines! It needs oil. Do you have a manual? A manual should be easy to find and someone on here should be able to point you in the right direction to find one. It should be pretty easy to maintain once you know how and it will reward with nice stitches!

I believe 566 is a manufacturer code for machines made for Sears, but marketed in Canada. I couldn't tell you the manufacturer, however. And in the earliest days of Kenmores (such as with manufacturer codes 120 and 117) the model numbers were only 2 or 3 digits with the last digit denoting minor changes made to the model over the course of the manufacturing run.

wow, you are absolutley right, I had the wrong number. The correct one should be 158.620. Thank you, I had no idea! As to the age it should be around 30-40 years old. Neither Mom or Nana were exactly sure. Thank you for your help!

Hi,you can find a list of different Kenmore model sewing machine manuals here.Does your Kenmore 158.620 look similar like this model ? If you can post a picture of your Kenmore 158.620 we might be able to post a free pdf manual for a similar model for you.Or you might find a free threading diagram for a similar sewing machine here under Kenmore 158 Models.

It doesn't look like that oneand it's not on either of the lists i'm going to try and post two pics, one of the whole machine and one of the plate with the number on it, perhaps i'm still reading it wrong. thank you for all your help.

*update* i can't get my picture uploaded but this is the closest i've found. it's the fifth down. mine doesn't have the knob in the center, but otherwise they look the same. here

Too bad that you can't upload a picture of your Kenmore !

If it says Kenmore 158.620 on your sewing machine, that is the model number,or does it say 148. before the dot ?
Did you click on all the Kenmore model numbers in the manual link to see if you can find a similar looking machine ? I couldn't find a free manual for your model number.Sometimes a manual is printed for more than one model,158.620 might be one of more models in a Kenmore manual. If you like to,you can also contact Sears parts department and ask if they have a manual for your Kenmore sewing machine.
