Here I go again with more questions! This time about making a lap quilt

But I have no idea about how to start it. So, here are my many questions. 1. How do I go about picking a size? 2. Once I figure out a size, how much fabric would I need? 3. How do I go about picking colors? I haven't a clue when it comes to mixing colors, patterns, etc. 4. Is there a book that anybody recommends? That's it - for now. Thank you!!
Kayabunga   Advanced IL USA Member since 1/21/10 Posts: 120	Login to reply to this post Like this post Date: 10/3/12 9:14 AM Go to a quilt shop (in the flesh) and look at their fabrics and project samples and see what lights your heart on fire, you know, makes you want to go home and make the quilt "right now". Or start with finding a "theme" fabric, a print that just makes you feel good when you look at it. Next find a pattern or book that has a design that you particularly like and you feel is within your skill level (don't short yourself with this, most quilts are VERY easy to actually sew, even though they look complicated). Once you have these 2 things you can find what other coordinating fabrics you need by finding fabrics that will go with your theme fabric. Most quilt shop owners will give you wonderful advice and it's a fun place to visit as well. Happy quilting!

I went to my local fabric shop (not a chain one) They actually have jelly rolls, charm packs, layer cakes, sets that you can choose and all the fabric for the front on your quilt has been put together for you. I googled quilts sizes and got a chart telling me the mattress sizes from twin to Cal King. This is very helpful in determining your yardage. The ladies at the fabric shop/quilt shop were very helpful in determining what I needed. Give it a try. Good Luck! You will love the outcome.

I love that they're all coordinated and work so beautifully together. I have saved it with my other favorite sites.

I've also taken both her classes at Craftsy. I use a lot of charm packs for my quilts. I like lap quilts long enough to tuck under my feet. And I prefer them to be oblong. I usually go for 50"-ish by 72"-ish, plus or minus five inches or so to accommodate the block layout. 60" x 60" is a very nice size for a decorative quilt to primarily hang over the sofa, though.
