So, my 8 week old Pfaff QE4 had to go back to the dealers because it 'looks like the pin has dropped out of the upper tension unit'. Ok, no prob, lovely dealer has it all sorted and Herr Pfaff will be back on Friday.

But - in discussion with the dealer, he said he'd 'fitted the upgraded tension unit so it can't happen again'. So to me, this suggestes that this is YET ANOTHER known problem with the QE4, only in this case not one that Pfaff have seen fit to fix in the manufacturing process. It appears to be one of those that is left to go wrong and then be upgraded when the customer complains. Presumably it's more economical for Pfaff to do this, maybe this fault only happens sometimes and maybe the upgraded unit costs more. Who knows?

OK this was an ex-demo model but it came straight from Pfaff and was completely immaculate, and I specifically asked if it was the current version before I bought it.

You would really think that after the appalling time they had with this model when it was launched they would just suck it up and make sure it went out perfect! I mean, I was well aware of the earlier issues with the QE4 but I really liked it and thought they must surely have got it right by now, so I felt pretty confident buying it.

Let's hope i wasn't misguided! I want to have many happy, trouble-free years with Herr Pfaff. It's not his fault...

I'm so sorry to hear this! I was assured by our only Pfaff dealer here in the state that with the new VP and all, things would be different going forward. That machine has great potential for people who are quilter/sewers only and aren't interested in embroidery.
I am sure they can resolve this for you, and if not, then perhaps give you another machine. I agree it's no fun having to bring it back twice! That's one reason I'm not going in that direction - the Pfaff dealer is just too far away in case of problems.

I'm sorry you're having problems with your Pfaff. I agree, if there is a known issue with a part, the new replacement part should be put into the machines at the factory.

I love those poor little (expensive) Pfaff Q.E. 4.0 machines.

They have so many wonderful things going for them -- + the stigma of a bad reputation.

Im suprised that Pfaff never came out with a 4.5 model to wash away the crimes of the past -- like the Viking 870 became the 875.

Oh, well -- they are celebrating their 150 birthday and Ive never had a business open more than a few years .. guess they know lots more than me.

I agree this is very disappointing. I hear of some 4.0 users who've not had a moment's problem but I'm still skittish and that's def the machine I would want if not for the fear factor involved. you don't want to feel as if you're taking a risk when spending that much $$ and it does still seem like a gamble whether you get home with a peach or a lemon. A good dealer can make all the difference there.

I had one and it was not .salvageable. But Pfaff replaced it after six months of frustration. I too wonder why they continue to sell this particular model and have not revised it. It is a great machine when it works well. Wonderful features for the price and even if it took a little bit more money to make it work well they should do it. In the long run people would pay it so long as the extra cost equaled for better quality, design, and reliability. It is terrible when you dont trust your machine and you are on a deadline to finish something.

I had an email from pfaff this morning announcing a $200 mail-in rebate with purchase. This makes me wonder if the expressions are on the short-list. The replacements most likely will be similar to the creative performance which would be a good thing and hopefully the issues that plague this series will be fixed!

All I have heard from the Pfaff dealer was a 3/4 machine for next spring -- but, who knows? I got that 200 rebate, too -- I think they are nice machines -- very nice deco stitches.

Oh Fatmog do I ever feel your pain.

I had problems with the tension/thread feeding system in my QE4 and have talked about this in other threads. My dealer couldn't/wouldn't fix it. I finally got on Pfaff's Facebook page and expressed my disappointment with this machine. Voila - next thing I know my machine is whisked off to Vancouver, BC for the technical guru there to fix. Fix it he did and it now works beautifully. But, a person should not have to go through this IMHO.

We are not alone. I ran into a woman at the Creative Stitches festival in my city about a month ago. She was from another city in my province and works at the quilt shop next to the Pfaff dealer there. She is having the exact same problems I had. She nearly did the happy dance on top of the cafeteria table when I told her my story and how I got mine fixed. Her dealer can't /won't fix the problem either and keeps treating her like she doesn't really understand how a sewing machine is supposed to work. Deja vu for me. I had the same experience with my dealer.

I don't know why Pfaff just won't yank this machine, fix the problems and rename it something else. It is ridiculous.

At the same time, I am very happy that Pfaff stood by their machine and fixed mine. My dealer is not so happy. He had to pay for the shipping to Vancouver and back. Now they are barely civil to me when I enter their store - like the whole thing is my fault. Also ridiculous and the reason I won't buy another Pfaff. We only have one Pfaff dealer where I live. I think that it is bad form for the dealer to take it out on me. Not my fault the machine was flawed, not my fault that Pfaff is making them pay for shipping.

For now, my QE4 works well but still, there will come a day when I find something else in my price range with similar features (Bernina is out of my price point) and I will be trading her in. I want to work with a dealer I can rely on.
