Halloween Costume Sponge Bob

I have searched the web and most of the ideas use a box. He doesn't want me using a box because it is too hard to move around and sit. What can type of fabric can I use that would be cheap and hold the square shape? All ideas will be welcome. I thougth about yellow felt, but how would I make it hold the square shape?

You might just tape the corners together with good old Duck Tape in yellow and paint the rest. Or you could do just a cooler front and back over shoulders with a separate head piece? Many mascot costumes are made of soft foam.

Or use pop up truck front windshield shades for the front and back. Sometimes the Dollar Store has a smaller square pop up hamper, about 12-14 inches. Almost forgot, the little pop out rectangle side window sunshades might be ideally sized. I used those to make a boot holder (for traveling) for my husband's western boots. The neck down costumes look like the safest ones. I don't suppose he would appreciate my thought that going as a squirt bottle of dish detergent could be intriguing in a world full of Sponge Bob's. -- Edited on 10/3/12 3:45 PM -- ------ I have no idea what Apple thought I was saying so be a Peach and credit anything bizarre to auto correct.

Though how would I attach the material or felt (yellow) to the sponge? I figured once I get the body, I can attach pants, tie, eye, nose and mouth. I was just going to cut a hole in the square for the head to fit up through and leave opening at the sides for the arms to come out. Thoughts?
