I'm working on butterick 5485. I need to lengthen the bodice approx 1 1/2 inches. Do I need to lengthen the bottom part or can I take up the difference in the hem?

It depends on where you need the extra length - above or below the "belt"

edited because maybe I misunderstood the question - did you mean do you need to shorten the "skirt" part at the top or can you just do it at the hem -

If that is the question, it is best to shorten it so the marking on the pattern for the waistline is at your waistline. That may or may not involve shortening it at the top.

I want to lengthen the bodice piece that connects to the midriff. So do I shortened the "skirt" part or can I make up the difference with the hem. thanks

OK my second reply above still holds then - you need to see if the "skirt" part still hits you in the right places. So if the (true) waistline is where it should be, you can shorten the skirt at the hem. If the waistline on the skirt is an inch and a half lower than your waistline, you would need to shorten the skirt at the top where it joins the bodice.

The only issue with just taking it off at the hem is you loose some of the flare of the skirt but it is the easiest. If you want to maintain the flare take it out as a tuck in the pattern and true the waist to hem.

On adding length for new empire, wrap, twist styles, HOW do you measure for the bodice on patterns without darts?
In RTW they only seem to design for young high-busted models, and then only knits work.
Can't tell you how many older or full-busted women I have seen wearing garments where the seamline hits right across or not fully under the bust, and raising the arms makes it worse.
