Is georgette close enough to crepe de chine to be replaced in a pattern calling for crepe de chine?

How do the two compare in terms of drape and opacity?

Thanks in advance!

Well, they both come in various weights and thickness, but in general, I'd say my crepe de chines are more opaque than my georgettes.

Crepe de chine, although not terribly high-gloss, tends to be shinier than georgette, which has a distinctive 'pebbly' texture and is matte.

You can mouse over large images of both fabrics here.

The two fabrics have different personalities: Georgette drapes really nicely, but tends to be floaty or kind of perky. Crepe de chine has a definite slink factor. That said, there are patterns which could go with both.

If you can, get samples of each fabric. When they're in your hand, you'll understand what I mean.

Thanks, Elona, that makes perfect sense. I think that I need the less floaty qualities of crepe de chine for this pattern.
