Breathablity

I have made tops out of polyester and I regret it because I sweat all day. I want to make some flowy tops for layering in winter. (I'd use wool as my out most layer). Date: 10/6/12 8:41 AM I can't wear poly either, although I have had some success with good quality ITY knits, which are texturized and more breathable. I prefer rayons, cottons, and linens, esp. blends. They will wrinkle, but I've accepted that I will need to iron in order to NOT sweat all day. LOL

Have you considered hemp? I've seen hemp woven and knits. Even a silk hemp blend. Hemp traders.com has some and there's even an eBay seller who has a hemp/organic cotton knit blend. Date: 10/9/12 10:00 PM Cotton and rayon both wrinkle, almost everything else makes you sweat. Here's an idea, instead of using wool as an outer layer, wear an undershirt (origin of the T-shirt) under your polyester blouse. The undershirt should be made of cotton or of the new super-wicking synthetics. Another advantage of this - it will prevent sweat stains and reduce wear on your blouses. ------ Measure twice, cut once.

For other layers I live in merino knits all winter. There are some lovely lightweight drapey merino knits available in NZ. I'm not sure about overseas suppliers but here you can get them at Global Fabrics (www.globalfabrics.co.nz) or NZ Merino (www.nzmerino.co.nz). NZ Merino has a website; GF has a bigger range and a website but you need to email or phone them up to discuss with them what they have. I hear central heating is rather warm over there so you may need a lighter weight or a woven. I don't have any woven suggestions, I like viscose jersey (esp with some spandex) but it does wrinkle a bit.

I'd like to make woven tops, I've had some bad luck lately buying knits that pill. I got some knits for knit tops and I wore them for one summer season and they pilled something awful. You're right silk jersey is lovely, but a bit out of my price range. Plus, I have two young children, so I have to wash and dry. I might give a little of everything a try...hemp, rayon, rayon blend. I have tried some bamboo knit fabrics and loved the breathability, but had problems with pilling. Anyone have some woven top patterns they'd recommend? ------ http://sewing4myself.blogspot.com/
