Fabric in Japan

My momwatched my two kids while they take a nap, and I finally got to go to the fabric store!! The result was... a little disappointing. I was thinking about getting a nice soft cotton knit to make something for my daughter, and realized that the prints they had were the same as RTW store and it's cheaper to just buy RTW. Some courdroy was REALLY cute, with prints and all, and I sooooo wanted to get it... But where I live, Hawaii, there's no need for it. I really like some double gauze (Nani Iro) but they were like $20/m, andI don't know if I want topay that much in just one fabric... :( I just realized, here in Japan, RTW is so much cheaper ($10-15 for pants or tops and they are not like Walmart quality, they are all actually pretty good) that I decided to go clothes shopping instead. Normally in the US I go to RTW store and think "oh, I can make this so much cheaper and better quality) but here in Japan it seems to be opposite. Just feels a little weird that I was so excited to go fabric shopping but instead heading to RTW stores... But a lovely woman who makes Kimono gave me 7 rolls of Kimono silk. Amazing. It is so truly beautiful, but I wanted some of those beautiful cotton prints. Now I am serching for patterns that have lots of seams for narrow fabric. I didn't get to clothes shop either, that would have been fun also.
