Hi there - I'm going to buy a serger, looking for a basic beginner's model that will help me work with the knits and jersey fabrics I love so much.

I'm going to buy through Costco.com simply because of their no questions asked return policy.

They offer the Brother 1134DW with is a 3/4 thread machine with "23 stitches" and the Singer Stylist Serger 14SH764CL, a 2/3/4 thread machine.

Pricing is within $20, so a non issue.

Reviews are mixed for both machines, the biggest complaints being threading in both cases.

I guess my question is, how much of a benefit is it to use 2 threads? The machines seem comparable otherwise.

Thank you all for your insight - I really appreciate it!

-Bridget.

I don't think I have ever used a two thread. I have used a thread thread for a roll hem. Do you have to switch plates for the roll hem or does either one of them have the retractable stitch finger.
I don't think I would want to switch plates for a rolled hem.

I think I would go with the brother. It looks easier to thread.

The Brother has a thread here devoted just to it and lots of happy owners. I bought mine from Amazon over a year ago and I had never used a serger either. I am one of the happy owners. Threading is not that difficult; changing needles is a pain but not difficult. It has a removable stitch finger that is very easy to get off and put back on for a rolled hem. I have not had any trouble with it. I went to You-tube and found videos that showed how to thread it. I find it super easy to use and makes a great rolled hem. Hopefully some of the Singer owners will chime in here.

Thank you all so very much. The Brother 1134DW is the one, then. I live in a rural place and can't get to town, which boasts only a rather tired Joann's Crafts for sewing stuff, so ordering online at costco.com is the best thing for me. I appreciate all the help!

I think you will like it. Read the thread under "Sergers" It has alot of great info. I can thread mine in just a few minutes now. It makes sewing knits a pleasure! Now I "need" a coverstitcher. See what happens when you hang out here
