I have been thinking of getting a subscription to a sewing magazine. I do get Vogue patterns.

But I am thinking of perhaps getting one to either Sew News or Threads.

While I am wanting to expand my sewing skills, I am not couture. (sp?) So, I am bit afraid that Threads might be too above me.

So, I would love to hear everybody's opinions.

I would think threads would be a bit more oriented to expanding your skills. I find Sew News just too basic. Threads at least is understandable and has techniques that you might try now, and then in a few months try something else. JMHO

There are several threads on this, one in the past few months if I recall correctly. Just do a search in the boards box and you'll find it.

In case you don't want to go searching, the general consensus is that Threads is one of the best general purpose sewing mags around. If you want something with a lot of patterns, then it's a toss up between Vogue and Burda.

the Vogue magazine has patterns? How did I not know this? I always got the impression it was more of a preview mag with some articles. Now I understand why people buy it.

Maybe try buying one of each of the magazines you are interested in and check them out. You can also go to their websites and check them out that way - before buying a subscription.

I would browse some stand issues or hit a larger city library and browse past issues. They change a bit over time. I got a subscription to both for a year and still can't decide which to drop. Very different. Sew News inspires and offers fast and easy patterns for people & things around the house. Its full of gift giving ideas. Threads expands my general knowledge of garment construction and goes into technique details. They are quite different and I love them both.

Sandi, you put it very well. I find Sew News more project based and THreads more skills based. I am a long time THreads subscriber, and I pick up Sew news here and there b/c I limit my subs.

There is Vogue, a fashion magazine, and Vogue Patterns, which has patterns and articles pertaining to fitting, fabric techniques, and other areas of sewing. The patterns are not for tracing, just featuring the patterns Vogue sells.

Thank you, MsMargaret for clarifying the Vogue issue for me! I def meant to mention that i was Vogue Patterns, not the regular Vogue mag :-)

And Vogue patterns has NO patterns in it. Just really pages of ads. Some articles. Nice mag but for the money, may as well just get Sew News and Threads as to get Vogue, and Sew News can have some nice articles and has a more down to earth young look and feel than Threads for sure. Threads does tend to get repetitive over the years, and I found I never actually sewed a dress with a lace overlay and sewn on crystals anyway, or a boucle coat or fake fur, nor did I make over a vintage pattern for my modern lifestyle, or anything like any of that, but they did have lots of good fitting articles and lots of inspiration inside the covers! Now my money is going to Modern Quilting Unlimited...HAhahha. You'd be surprised. Fabric art flows naturally out of the sewing hobby.
