My daughter bought a cable knit pullover sweater and wants me to cut off the arms and extra length as well as cutting down the CF to make a sweater type of vest. I told her it won't have a button closure unless I use the sleeve material to make a backing for the CF. She's fine with no closure as we are pressed for time.

Since I typically don't work with a thicker sweater knit like this, I am making a guesstimate on how to finish the openings: serge, turn under, and stitch. Does this sound like a viable plan? Thicker sweater knits like this cable sweater knit are outside of my usual fabric range.

I have seen grosgrain ribbon doubled and interfaced for the front opening adding buttons and buttonholes to the ribbon. With the other openings you could use it as well not doubled but single, and serge or sew it to the sweater and then turn up and hem.
Just a suggestion......never tried this myself.

Thanks! That is a great idea for the grosgrain. Will remember that. I did end up serging the edges and turning under. The front edge was interfaced with fusible tricot. I told my daughter to check out the Salvation Army store in her college town for men's M and L sweaters that she likes, and I could turn it into a couple more vests if she likes. She liked the one I did this morning, but it's more fitted. She seemed to like it though.
