Rainjacket - storm Mountain Summit, Jalie 2008, or something else? Advice on patterns please!

Date: 10/17/12 11:33 PM I'm wanting to have a go at sewing my own rain shell jacket with a hood. So far the most promising patterns are the Storm Mountain Summit Parka and Jalie 2008, though I probably wouldn't fully line it. I need a largish size (bust 115 cm, hips 128 cm) and I'm short, which males it hard to find rtw, plus I just lost my lovely Marmot jacket, something like this newer version and I picked up some cheap waterproof (not breathable) nylon, so I thought I might have a go. Questions: 1.have you sewn any waterproof gear? 2. Can you recommend any particular patterns or features to look for? 3. Can you recommend any places to see reviews of this type of pattern? Obviously I've read the ones on PR and on the Jalie site. I've also read Kbenco's excellent posts on seam sealing and her Goretex jacket journey. Looks like you have all of the info I have too. Maybe you just have to plunge in and start! I'll be spectating all the way! Only other suggestion is to get hold of an old rain jacket and take it apart to see how it is put together? I would recommend a very light weight lining, as that helps keep the laminating from coming off. I am about your size, and I purchased parkas here in the US from Land's End and Eddie Bauer in plus sizes. Also, Columbia does make plus size women's apparel. I do not know what their overseas shipping is like, but it might be easier than making it. Good Luck!

I've sewn several raincoats for myself. Light weight, waterproof, breathable , important words....I've gotten my fabrics from Rose City Textiles. But I live in the Portland area and could pick out the latest and greatest. MicroTex needles to punch through those tight woven fabrics. Seam sealer for ALL the seams. Less seams the better. Make a muslin. I've used rayon bemberg lining for my coats. I've used nylon mesh fabrics for pockets and such. Get the good insulation fabrics . There are 3-4 different weights. You decide what is best for you. good luck.
