Of course, we intended to start this project in September and just couldn't get it going and of course we got plenty of corn for filling them, but who knows how many cups are in a 20 kilo bag of corn? And why is it that there is just no way anyone else could help out on this? Because that is how it goes. All the staff were needed elsewhere and it was just what had to be done.
So I did get all of the bags sewn before today, but the corn had to be measured and poured, all the end seams sewn up and threads trimmed, as well as each bag needing at least one spin through the microwave to be sure any possible critters-to-be that might be hiding were well nuked out.
Got started a little after 1 pm and was done and tidied by 3 pm. A few bags left to heat, but she who got me into this mess....errrr ....project was able to do that part after I left. 60 bags! I sure hope I counted right because they are going to a conference about "Caring for the Caregiver" tomorrow and I know people will all want one.
Good news is that there is enough grain left and extra bag fabric so each of our teen moms will be able to make one for themselves. ------ http://bgballroom.wordpress.com to follow the progress on my next ballgown. |

Date: 10/19/12 9:32 AM Thanks Pigling - but don't give me too much credit. I did have sleep as this was done in the afternoon. And I did it at work, so it didn't even eat into my home sewing time. ------ http://bgballroom.wordpress.com to follow the progress on my next ballgown. |

Date: 11/9/12 1:17 PM Where did you get your corn and how much did it cost? I know pop corn doesnot work, the cornnuts I got were eaten by my husband and the rice "smells funny" when warmed according to my daughter. ------ JanieV |

Date: 11/10/12 3:20 AM Janie - the rice is not pleasant. We got the corn at a feed store but I think the person that wrote the tutorial says you can also get it at Walmart in some areas. Wheat berries work and I have used dried chick peas in a pinch. They are a lot more costly, but still cheap if you are only making a few bags. The website is microwave corn bags.com, I believe. Lots of good info there about how to safely use the bags in a hospital setting. ------ http://bgballroom.wordpress.com to follow the progress on my next ballgown. |

Date: 11/10/12 11:48 AM I think the variety of rice makes a difference. Jasmine rice has a better fragrance than regular rice. |

I LOVE my corn warmers, I nuke mine all winter long and take one with me when traveling/visiting. I am cold natured and just hate being chilly. Perfect for that first 5 minutes of driving before the heat in the car kicks in, great in the bottom of the bread basket and just the right thing to warm my feet when I crawl into bed! |
