I have made a cape. This was to be my muslin but I decided that I do like the fabric once it is done up.

The problem is how do you mark button holes on this fabric?

I tried hand basting but it gets lost in the loft of the fabric.

Here are pictures of the cape. Any suggestions are welcome.

Space Tape is a clear, somewhat adhesive tape with a buttonhole shape and the standard buttonhole lengths printed on it. You cut off a piece, center it over where you want your buttonholes, press down lightly, put a stabilizer on the underside of your fabric (as usual), and then just stitch those buttonholes! There will be no creeping, no rippling, no distortion or 'fisheye buttonholes' on your garment, and no problem with removal of markings, either.

When you're done, just peel off the extra tape, and if you're super fussy, use tweezers to pick out the tiny tape bits left in the center of the buttonhole. The buttonhole will be quite stable, and cutting it open will be a breeze.

I use this stuff all the time, and cannot recommend it strongly enough.

Scheri,
Is this boucle?

Pin tissue to both sides of the fabrics where you want the buttonholes to be and THEN mark it with thread basting.
You could also hoop it so the fibers stay aligned and aren't so lofted.
A small embroidery hoop is all you need. Just make sure it doesn't interfere with the sensor or buttonholer.

Don't confuse accessibility with ease; just because anybody can pick up a needle and thread doesn't mean sewing quality garments is easy.

Thank you ladies.

Yes this is a very lofty boucle fabric. I did try marking button holes on a piece of tissue and then basted to the front of the cape but to much give.....

The adhesive marked with buttonholes just might do the trick.

I won't be wearing this any time soon. Will need to order.

Thanks again!
