Date: 10/21/12 8:41 PM I want to sew a sleeper for my granddaughter who is 18 months, but I'm concerned about the snap that is fastened at the top.
Are there safe snaps that can be securely fastened?

Date: 10/21/12 11:12 PM I have snaps from the Snap Source and they were supposed to be good, but they don't work with Polar Fleece. They come out so I now use velcro for the closure at the top of the sleeper. I contacted the company and they told me that polar fleece doesn't work well with their snaps.

Date: 10/22/12 6:23 AM I love Snap Source. Their gizmo is easy to use. I only used organic cotton knits when sewing for my grandson, neice & nephew, no fleeces though. They make fun colors in the metal ones. Or you can use plastic snaps on a strip that is sewn in. ------

Date: 10/22/12 11:17 AM If you use the right tools, snaps can be fastened securely so you won't have to worry about them coming loose. I use Snap Source snaps, Size 14, when I make baby clothes. I've used them a lot on preemie gowns our local ASG group makes for the NICU unit. The Snap Source sells both the snaps and tools to set them. All you need is a hammer. Here is a link to the Snap Source Size 14 snaps (NAYY).
Good luck with the snaps you choose to work with. Maybe the snaps I mentioned won't work on Polar Fleece (I've never tried), but I'm sure you'll be making other items of clothing out of flannel, 100% cotton or knits for your granddaughter. ------

Date: 10/22/12 3:42 PM I hated snaps for the pyjamas. I made pants and tshirt with cotton jersey. I made them extra long so they fit snuggly. It was faster to make and to dress the child. |

Date: 10/22/12 4:10 PM Is it the kind of sleeper with a zipper and then a tab at the top with a snap on it? I have rtw versions like this, and ones without the snap, and I think it's fine to just leave the snap off as long as the zipper is not going to rub on her chin. |

I have a kam snap press. It's one of my favorite tools. I bought it when my dgd was born 4 years ago. I used it on diapers. Now I use it on her clothes, my clothes, purses, wallets, all kinds of things. A friend of mine bought one after seeing mine, just to use on American Girl doll clothes.------
My grandmother taught me to sew when I was 10, and I've been sewing ever since. |

Date: 10/23/12 0:20 AM Buy some snap tape. You can get it in white at Joann's or different colors if you look around. But if you're concerned about the one snap on the top, and plan to use a zipper for a closure (a sleeper similar to the one my son had), then I'd cut the upper snap off. You really don't need it as long as you press down on the zipper slide. Pressing down on the slide locks the zipper in place. ------
