Date: 10/22/12 4:02 PM I will be in downtown Chicago for 4 days this week (10-23 to 10-26) and in Minneapolis on Saturday 10-27 and wondering if there are any good places to look in on? I won't have a ton of time, so looking for the 1 or 2 best places to browse/shop or ogle nice fabrics. No car- just public transport. I am interested in apparel fabrics, not quilt shops.
ps I have a Joanns, Hobby Lobby and Hancocks in my area so not interested in visiting there. Really looking for what are fun or unique in your areas! |

Date: 10/22/12 4:42 PM Vogue Fabrics, perhaps? I believe it's in Evanston, but it would be a quick and direct ride on the "El" (elevated train)

Date: 10/22/12 5:25 PM In Minneapolis my 2 "go-to" stores when I'm there are SR Harris (a warehouse with lots of everything -- you cut your own under 5 yards and you'll have to dig but there are nice silks and wools) and Treadle Yard Goods (which is actually in St. Paul).
Not sure about public transportation for either as I always have a vehicle when I go to Minneapolis.
When the PR Weekend was in Chicago in 2011 we visited several stores -- my faves were Fishman's (and there is a Vogue about a block or two away) and Soutache Trims. Again not sure about public transportation as we were on the PR bus.
I'm sure others will chime in that actually live in these two cities -- I'm coming at it from a visitors perspective.

NAYY.
I am not sure of bus service on Saturday in Minneapolis/St. Paul. But you can check on- line .... Metro Transit System.
SRHarris is great too. My sister and I have gone a couple of times. Bring a backpack, water, and wear tennis shoes it is a huge warehouse and you have to dig. Expect to be there a few hours.
Have fun!

Date: 10/22/12 10:04 PM Fishman's and the Vogue location downtown are right around the corner from each other. I highly recommend them both since you're short for time. The Evanston Vogue is larger so if you do find some extra time, try to get out that way. ------ I'm finally a blogger!

Date: 10/23/12 0:21 AM The other one in that area is Rainbow Fabrics -- a smaller store but still some neat finds.

Date: 10/23/12 12:56 PM Vogue in Evanston should be easy to reach both by CTA and Metra. Both have stops within a short walking distance of the store. ------ Brine |

Date: 10/23/12 1:40 PM The westbound number 12 Roosevelt bus will take you to Vogue, Fishman's and Rainbow from the south loop area. The southbound Red, Green or Orange line trains will take you to Roosevelt from anywhere in the loop.
Get a free transit map at any CTA train/subway/EL station.
Also in the loop (I think it's still open. Maybe call first?)
Chicago Yarn, Button and Fabric
This place has been in at least 3 locations downtown in the past 10 years or so. The owner is a bit odd and there's lots of junk, but there are hidden gems there. -- Edited on 10/23/12 1:48 PM -- ------ I am going for a level of perfection that is only mine... Most of the pleasure is in getting that last little piece perfect...Inspiration is for amateurs. The rest of us just keep showing up and doing the work.
