Hi all:

My aunt has a brand-new Quantum. We were putting together some crafts, when I saw metal bobbins wound with the different colors of thread as well as plastic ones. I freaked. I told her not to use the metal ones because it could damage the machine. Was I right? I know that it came with the plastic ones but I don't know where her manual is. Does anyone else interchange bobbins?

Thanks...
Erica

If they work in the machine it shouldn't hurt it. It would be just like any other bobbins.

You really should not use metal bobbins in computerized machines at all. You should use the bobbins that your machine came with and others of the exact same kind. NO metal is a general rule in these machines as far as i know. You don't need to use anything but the right kind anyway.

Here's a link to the Singer Page where you can download the manual . I didn't download the manual, but I'm pretty sure it's going to say to only use plastic 15J bobbins.

The manual never does say. All it says is Use Singer Bobbins Only.

But of course they are the 15J... I think I finally found that on the Singer website, I don't recall now. And I went with the plastic because of what I read here about using metal ones in these computerized machines (not to mention they are cheaper and easier to come by and most importantly, that is what the machine comes with so that is what I use)

My mechanic recomends using plastic bobbins in any machine with a drop in bobbin where the built in bobbincase is made of plastic. A metal bobbin in a plastic bobbincase wears grooves inside as it spins and will need to be replaced frequently. For computer machines even more important to only use plastic.
