How do we feel about plaid? Does it flatter only models? Or can it work for real people?

They seem so cozy and fun. I'm not really into the bold ones, but I stumbeled across a lovely black and white plaid poplin with just a tiny bit of stretch and instantly thought it would make a fun cozy winter every day dress. Then I realized plaid might make me look bigger, which I'm not really on board with. What do you think? Does plaid always make one look bigger? Or can it work? ------ Melanie

All the intersecting lines in a plaid top or blazer look busy to me, seem to add bulk. Just my impression. I can imagine a straight plaid skirt in greys with one color (burgundy, navy, pink) looking sharp. ------ 🌸 Plenty of machines, mostly Berninas 🌸

Like any print, you need to be careful to avoid ending up looking like a sofa. Personally, I'm all for an ankle length tartan skirt, but then again, I need to balance an egg-with-legs body type.

I love plaid shirts. I also like it when the plaid can be put on the diagonal. I put center front bands on the diagonal along with yokes, cuffs and sometimes the side panel on a princess seam shirt or vest.. Small even plaids are not easy to find. ------ Ada

Date: 10/25/12 11:36 AM I LOVE plaid (in many forms) - I have several flannel shirts, and a few cotton blouses. I also have some fabric waiting to be made into garments. I am as far from being a model as you get - short, wide, very short-waisted. Just completed this tunic recently (and can't wait for it to be cold enough to wear it). Also have this fabric mostly cut out to make a JJ Blouse. I also want to make a peplum blouse like this one from this - I agree w/ the person who said it's like any other print, and will take that even further. Just like any print (think maybe of floral), the colors, size of print (and repeat), and the way it's used (for a skirt vs an entire dress) will make a big difference. Also, and I think this is the most important part, how it makes you feel while wearing it has the biggest effect on how you appear to others. Again, just as any color, print or style. The same outfit could be wild and trendy or costumey and clownish. It could brighten the day for you, make you feel cozy, or make you feel a mile wide and frumpy. If it's the last, then maybe you should move on.

In lighter colors on top, and in darker shades on the bottom. I never go for the really contrast-y ones, though. I don't wear prints, so plaid is a good way to "break up" my outline - in my case it disguises a lack of curves. (I love it, too, lol) It's NL 6110 and I seem to be recommending it all over the place, lol. I want to sew it again (which I haven't wanted to do with several of the tops I've made this year).
