Date: 10/30/12 7:28 PM Here goes one more question on this top. The knit fabric that I'm using makes the cowl neck too bulky for me (petite, short neck) even though it is a thin sweater type one. Have tried to use only one layer of cowl and it may work, but the edge curls. Wonder any suggestions to stop this curling other than doing a lettuce edge? Would like collar to be as classic, simple as possible. |

Date: 10/31/12 5:43 AM Try cranking up your split differential feed right there, so your feed dogs are actually condensing that knit fabric while sewing on it there, instead of both parts of them moving together and it possibly stretching it out, instead. That might work. |

Date: 10/31/12 11:41 AM I did a one layer cowl on this too. I hemmed the edge with a 1.5 inch hem and used the cover stitch. Obviously you could also use a double needle too. I made the hem this wide so that it wouldn't flip to the outside. Here's a photo if that helps -- https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-r-BdKcmuVlE/ToH0WNV9wGI/AAAAAAAAEwQ/MyIboY7qCNA/s776/IMG_2351.JPG ------ Patti

If you want to serge the hemline without having the lettuce edge, adjust your feed dog differential, as beauturbo mentions. Increase it by a notch or two, and that will act to "gather" the fabric slightly, just enough to prevent the knit from stretching out.
To do a lettuce edge you would decrease the differential feed so the fabric would be stretched. ------ I heart Panzy, Pfaff Creative Performance, the sewing machine love of my life!
