Date: 10/31/12 0:05 AM I'm making a skirt for a friend. It's her fabric that she brought me and it's a fairly thick wool fabric. I'm up to the point of putting the zipper in and can't decide whether to use a centered or lapped application. I'm worried that the lap will kind of stand out and look bulky but I'm not usually a fan of a centered zipper.
Does anyone have any suggestions or comments on how I should handle this zipper application? |

Date: 10/31/12 3:16 AM Can you try an invisible zip in a scrap of fabric? It might work, as the bulky material would tend to roll over the teeth. Otherwise a lapped zipper should be ok, but make sure the lap part is wide enough to take a good press and cover the zipper pull really well. It might help to hand pick the last stage. ------ so many patterns, clamouring to be sewn

Date: 10/31/12 8:55 AM I recently saw some wool flannel skirts at J Crew with invisible zipper enclosures that looked very sharp. I have a skirt made out of a thicker wool where I inserted a lapped zipper application. It does the job but I should have done with with an invisible zip. ------ I'm finally a blogger!

Date: 10/31/12 9:08 AM I would strongly suggest single lap. Mostly because it won't be as bulky. ------ "We don't impose our rhythm on Nature. The key is to respect and live within Her." Jean-Charles Boisset, Winemaker

Date: 10/31/12 9:22 AM Thanks for the input ladies. I'll to go play around with scraps and different styles of inserting the zipper. I hadn't even thought of an invisible zipper. Food for thought ... and play. |

Date: 10/31/12 10:46 AM Just a word of warning--an invisible zipper won't cross a seam in a bulky fabric. So if there is a waistband seam, be sure to test out a seam with the invisible. It can be done, but you have to sew far enough away from the zipper teeth that the zipper is no longer invisible at the seam junction.
I've done a lapped zipper in fairly thick fabric. It's visible, but not obtrusive. It's my preference to hand sew the lap if the fabric is thick enough that the stitches will just sink in, as seen here. -- Edited on 10/31/12 10:49 AM -- ------ http://theslapdashsewist.blogspot.com

Date: 10/31/12 11:38 AM I would do a hand picked centered zipper in the back.
Or you could do an exposed zipper which seems to be all the rage.

2 members like this. Date: 10/31/12 1:13 PM After a fair bit of playing around I ended up doing a lapped zipper. I didn't have an invisible one in a colour that would work, so lapped it was. It actually turned out much better than I had thought it would. A really, really good pressing did wonders! No need to hand pick this zipper as the stitching absolutely disappears into the fabric.
Thanks to all for the input. It was like having my hand held while I was stitching and made me confident that it was going to turn out nicely. |
